Khwaabon Ka Shehzaada - Sahir Ludhianvi, on his 28th death anniversary Options Rating

Today is Sahir Ludhianvi's 28th death anniversary. Sahir once said, "Kal Aur Aayenge Naghmon Ki Khilti Kaliyaan Chun-ne Waale, Mujhse Behtar Kehne Waale, Tumse Behtar Sun-ne Waale", but how do we tell Sahir sahab that there hasn't been anyone who has proved to be a better poet than him. Talk about better, there isn't even anyone who has come close to Sahir Ludhianvi after him!
I wish he hadn't left us all so early. His presence and his thoughts would have made the Hindi Music World a better one. I pay tribute to this great poet!

Actually every true music lover will reach a stage where he gets to know the lyrics and appreciates it. But there wont be many places where he can speak out his feelings. Am glad that I found this, thanks to Anupama. And needless to say, your audience / participation makes it all the more lively !

Another immortal verse of Sahir...which is adopted by the Maestro for the film Gazal..where Rafi Sahab gave His soul out for this beautiful feeling...


Taaj tere liye, ik mazâhar-e-ulfat hi sahi (mazâhar-e-ulfat = place of revelation of love)
tum_ko is waadi-e-rangi se aqeedat hi sahi (aqeedat = faith)
meri mehboob ! kahin aur mila kar mujh_se !!

Bazm-e-shaahi mein , garibon ki guzar kya maani ? (bazm-e-shaahi = royal congregation)
sabt jis raah pe ho, satwat-e-shaahi ke nishaan (satwat-e-shaahi = fear of the king )
us pe ulfat bhari roohon ka safar kya maani ?


meri mehboob, pas-e-parda-e-tashâhir-e-wafaa tune

anâginat logon ne, duniya mein mohabbat ki hai

Yeh imaarat-o-maqaabir, yeh faslen, yeh hisaar
mutaaq-ulâhukm shahenshahon ki azmat ke satun
daaman-e-dahar pe, us rang ki gulkaari hain
jisme shaamil hai, tere aur mere ajaad ka khoon

meri mehboob ! unhe bhi to mohabbat hogi
jinki sannaaâi ne bakhshi hai, ise shaql-e-jameel ( sannaaâi = art of a sculptor )
( shaql-e-jameel = beautiful form/shape)
unke pyaaron ke maqaabir rahe, be-naam-o-numood (muqaabir = tombs)
(be-naam-o-numood = unnamed and unmentioned)
aaj tak, un pe, jalaai na kisi ne kindeel (kindeel - lamp )


yeh chamanzaar, yeh Jamuna ka kinara, yeh mahal,
yeh munaqqash dar-o-deewaar, yeh maheraab, yeh taaq
ik shahenshaah ne daulat ka sahaara lekar,
ham garibon ki mohabbat ka udaayaa hai mazaaq !!

Venkat, many thanks for this eternal poem - Taj Mahal. Sarcasm was Sahir's forte. You can observe his use of satire in many of his songs.
Sahir wrote Taj Mahal in 1943, without ever seeing the Taj Mahal, and it was published in his first book "Talkhiyaan" in 1945. It was not until almost twenty years after that his poem was used in the movie Ghazal 1964. It is said that this was Sahir's response to his contemporary rival Shakeel Badayuni's Ek Shehanshah Ne Banwa Ke Haseen Taj Mahal from the film Leader 1964 or vice-versa.
