Extracts from "My son, Guru Dutt", a biography of the film-maker/director/producer/actor by his mother, can be read in the online publications of SCREEN commencing with the issue of Sep. 17.
Please click on "ARCHIVE" (in small lettering on top right-hand side of the screen) and type in the date of the issue, then look up the subject "GOLDEN JUBILEE". The later extracts have references to Geeta Dutt's fame and the tempestuous relationship of the couple (coloured by a mother's perception). If you stop trying to make sense of it all, you'll be less confused. Reality is an illusion.

Thank you all so much that finally people are starting to talk and discuss about the most wonderful and talented singer Geeta Dutt. I am an ardent fan of Geeta Dutt and I cannot find anyone else in the category of her. It is shameful that such a talent had to end like the way she did.
I read what Guru Dutt's mother wrote about Geeta. It does not surprise me at all. The mentality here is: Because she was a lady, she was supposed to sacrifice her career and take care of the homefront while Guru Dutt could pursue affairs as well as his talent!!!! Wa Wa!! Moreover one should understand Bengalis always had a different culture than rest of India during that time, where the lady rules the household (in fact it is sometimes better), moreover Bengalis treat men and women on equal footings when it comes to external matters and Geeta was a true product of a cultured Bengali family. It was unfair on Guru Dutt's mother to even utter such filth about Geeta, who could be so much more successful than her son had her son not messed the marriage up. Also, I am desperately looking for the Bengali movie "BADHU BARAN". Rakhee Gulzar's first film. Geeta acted in it. Also is Gouri still available? Bappa Chatterjee |
