Gujarati is the official language of Gujarat state, on the west coast of India, with an area of 196,024 square kilometers. Within the Republic of India, Gujarat borders with Rajasthan, Madhyapradesh, and Maharashtra; it also borders with Pakistan to the northwest. The languages spoken in the areas contiguous to the Gujarat within India are Marwari, Hindi, and Marathi. The 1991 census of India reports 40,673,814 speakers, accounting for approximately five percent (4.85%) of the population. This includes Gujaratis living outside Gujarat state, in Maharashtra (Mumbai has a substantial Gujarati population), Rajasthan, Madhyapradesh and Karnatak. Gujarati speakers also reside in many other countries, principally Pakistan, Singapore, Fiji, South Africa, the United Kingdom, the United states, and Canada.

That reminds me I have to translate the article of last wk of July that was on Rafi sahab and Mehmood.

Here's an interesting twist.

I was talking to my friend back in A'bad regarding this story in GS and asked him to catch up on it. Now I know that he had gone to a wedding in Rajkot. The wedding was of Samrat, who is the marketing guy in my friend's chemical business. I know Samrat quite well and know that he is very much into gujarati sahitya in general and that his dad is some big gujju sahityakar. So I asked my friend, if Ashok Dave was in the jaan to Rajkot too, because the story definitely coincided with the wedding. My friend just laughed out loud - he said "Alya, Ashok Dave Samrat na pappa chhe!!! Of course he was in the jaan".

I asked him if Samrat was indeed in the predicament as explained in the story! He refrained from commenting
