This is also a remnant of the former desiboard, started by a wonderful user named bm99 with contributions from other members, feel free to add on. The idea was
QUOTE to make a list of Punjabi songs featured in Hindi movies. Meaning that the songs either have a similar melody to traditional Punjabi songs, have Punjabi boliyaan, etc. ........or even have a line or two of Punjabi in them.Doston, Apna Tau Yeh Imaan Hai Jo Bhi Jitna Saath De, Ehsaan Hai Umr Ka Rishta Jodne Waale Apni Nazar Mein Deewane Hai Thanks for the memories HF. Hi
I glanced at your list and did not see some prominent songs of the 1950's like'Main koi jhooth bolia' (MD Salil Chaudhury)from Jaagte Raho. Also 'Naya Daur'(MD O.P.Nayyar) had Punjabi type Hindi/Urdu songs like'Yeh desh hai veer jawano ka' 'Reshmi salwar kurta jaali ka'and 'Uden jab jab zulfen teri' all written by Sahir Ludhianvi. To name a few other films Shanker Jaikishan's "Ujala' 'Kanhaiya'and 'New Delhi', Naushad's 'Sohni Mahiwal' and many more movies with music by O.P. Nayyar had Punjabi type songs.I am not sure if 'Naach' is a movie from 40's or 50;s but it had a mostly Punjabi song 'wat takkun main teri kothe chadke aaja merey balma bahana karke' sung by Suraiya (MD Husn Lal; Bhagat Ram).I think there are numerous other songs from the 40;s, 50;s and 60's that could be added to this list.By the way I am really impressed with your knowledge of Punjabi songs in particular and of Punjabi culture and Punjabiyat in general. Please continue providing us with all the information and sources related to Punjabi.Harjinder |

You have just named some of my very favorites (as seen here) and they are on my list, but I have only reached songs starting with "B" yet...... I wanted to post until "G" yesterday but the board was not cooperating with me and would not even let me post the rest of the "B's" in one topic, I'm not sure if the maximum size for a post has been reduced recently or not, or if it was a glitch. Anyways, thanks for the nice words.

My two daughters went through an experience very much like yours.Unhaan noon Punjabi te Hindi unahan deean maassiyan ne hi ithay aa ke sikhayee. Main te meri wife ithay teacher haan (I am retired now) te ghar ate bahar English hi ziyada bolde si.Betiyan deean massiyan ne Hindi filman te Punjabi gaanian naal saadey ghar da mahaul hi badal ditta. Waddi beti taan Punjabi tuhadey taranh hi boldi hai lekin chhoti beti taan authentic Punjabi lehze naal gallan kar laindi hai.But they both have made a point of talking to us and our friends in Punjabi.I hope we all can follow example of Greek-Amercans. I rarely meet any Grrek-Amercans who cannot talk in their own language.Main te kuchh Urdu wee padh lainda haan. You also seem to have knowledge of the Persian script as you posted a link about Shahmukhi Punjabi dictionary.I did not go over your song list too carefully and was in a mood to mention my favorite old songs. I guess I may have duplicated what you alredy were working on. Anyway nice to know ki naveen paneeri noon wi saadey wirsey naal judan di lagan hai.Harjinder |

Sonu, I think I have enough space, I've added the bulk for now. I'm sure there's tons of obvious ones missing, so let the additions & corrections begin! I probably won't return to this list for a long time, I still have to add tons to the Shaadhi list too someday.... I can't praise the Dutch "Sarnami" people enough for retaining their culture as much as they have, I've encountered several online and they are always pleasant to talk to as well..... My relatives laughed at me as a young girl, it didn't stop me from speaking it. Unfortunately that is not so for many, they don't speak b/c of the ridicule.
Uncleji, which song from New Delhi? (I'm unfamiliar with that soundtrack). Please let me know and I will add that one and the one from Naach to the list up there. They say that if children learn the other language before age 10 they don't retain the accent. Maybe that was the case with your children? Immigrant relatives and trips to India I think are the two most important things to help retain one's culture, but I think we as a people are perhaps a little too eager to assimilate. As far as the languages, I tend to love ghazals and qawwalies so that leads to a natural interest in Sufi Kalam, Urdu, etc. Doston, Apna Tau Yeh Imaan Hai Jo Bhi Jitna Saath De, Ehsaan Hai Umr Ka Rishta Jodne Waale Apni Nazar Mein Deewane Hai Thanks for the memories HF.
