Known as jankavi Shailendra, i.e. janta ka kavi, aam aadmi ka kavi.
Shailendra wrote from the perspective of the common man and that's why he is so
popular till date. Shailendra's strong point was an emotional depth and eloquence
without being verbose. One of the greatest poets Hindi Literature has witnessed in
history. Had he not been in Hindi film Industry he would have been a celebrity in
Literary circles.

Simplicity and sincerity of his expressions made his songs immortal. He had a
tremendous sense of music and never did his words fail to fit like hand in glove
to the tune. He brought many of his personalaty traits into his songwriting.
His romantic nature expressed itself through songs like Khoya khoya chaand.
His fun loving persona showed itself in songs like Yahoo…chahe koi mujhe junglee kahe.
His supreme self-confidence peeped through when he said Gardish mein hoon,
asmaan ka taara hoon. His patriotic feelings so touchingly came across in
Aa ab laut chale…tujhko pukare desh tera. His fatalistic thinking gave itself away through
expressions like Jin raaton ki bhor nahi hai, aaj aisi hi raat aayee.


Shailendra considered his life as his real poetry. He used to derive inspiration from his
walks long Juhu beach every morning. He wrote songs for almost all occasions of life, let
alone ordinary situations. Those lyrics were vibrantly alive, in the sense they went far
beyond the context of the film situation for which they were intended, and lived on long
after the film itself had passed from memory. There is a Shailendra song for any emotion,
any situation, from birth to death, such was his versatility. ......down melody lane

Aur ye baat ek haqeeqat hai ki Sabse madhur geet wahi hain, jinhe hum dard ke sur
mein gaate hain. Poora film sansar ka itihas utha kar dekh lijiye, sabse karnpriya aur
madhur rachnayen, dard bhari hain. Bina dard ke manav jeevan mein anand kahan.
Bina dard ke to khushi ki bhi koi ahmiyat nahin.

Samvedna dard je upajti hai, khushi se nahin. Khushi single dimension wali hai, to Dard
three dimensional hai. Is jajbe par mein kya kej sakta hoon. Bade bade kavi aur shayar
mahakavya likh gaye hain DARD par to.

Jab had se gujar jaati hai khushi,
