Hi friends,
In forty years of bollywood career, Guru has virtually sung with every singer who appeared on the scene during that period....104 male singers and 83 female singers to be precise (this includes songs with multiple singers on a song as well as non-singers lending their voice for some dialogues within the song...like Shtarughan Sinha having some dialogues in Jwalamukhi song Paan Bidi Cigarette Tambakoo Na Sharaab, Humko To Nasha Hai Mohabbat Ka Janab)....

Various database on these Jodies created along the way of discussions on this thread has been indexed as under:

INDEX OF DATABASE CREATED ALONG THE WAY

Description_____________________________________________Post No.
1. List of Duets with Rafi-------------------------------------------------------019
2. List of Duets with Pankaj Udhas--------------------------------------------009
3. List of Duets with Danny Dengzopa----------------------------------------013
4. List of Male co-singers of Guru---------------------------------------------022
5. List of Female co-singers of Guru------------------------------------------023
6. List of Duets with Bhupendra-----------------------------------------------034
7. List of Duets with Manna Dey----------------------------------------------035
8. List of Duets with Shamshad Begam--------------------------------------036
9. List of Duets with Geeta Dutt----------------------------------------------044
10. List of Duets with Mahendra Kapoor--------------------------------------058
11. List of Duets with Mukesh------------------------------------------------073
12. List of Songs by Guru picturised on Vijay Arora--------------------------126
13. List of Songs by Guru composed by OP Nayyar--------------------------137
14. List of Songs by Guru and Amit Kumar-----------------------------------145
15. List of Songs by Guru under RD Burman's music-------------------------177

Here, i intend putting up some of the chosen few songs with these singers (to the extent that i have the songs)...of course some of them might be the ones which i got from this very forum courtesy our fellow-members....

i start with Bhupendra, who, while, is not as versatile as Guru, but i do like the heaviness and depth of his voice...

(i) Achchhi Achchhi Pyari Pyari
Film: Trimurty 1974

Singers: KK, Bhupinder, Nitin Mukesh
Duration: 03:26@128

(ii) Duki Pe Duki Ho
Film: Satte Pe Satta 1981

Singers: KK, Asha, Bhupinder, RD
Duration: 04:06@128

(iii) He Mujhe Dil De
Film: Mr. Romeo 1973

Singers: KK, Asha, Bhupinder, RD
Duration: 05:54@128

Incidentally MD for all these is RD....he definitely liked Bhupinder a lot....may be because Guru's default pitch and Bhupinder's pitch were very close...as were Manna Dey's and Yesudas's....but then Guru was Guru...he could mould his voice, its pitch and throw depending upon the situation in the movie and the mannerism the actor...many are greats but then only a few are genious..

So, moving diametrically opposite, from odd men out to male co-singer with whom Guru has sung the most in a jodi.....yes we are talking of Mohd. Rafi....KK and Rafi, two biggest ever vocal giants of hindi film music, have sung 70 songs together with 36 of them being true blue duets...i am sure, like me, thats a treat to music lovers...

Well, a lot has been talked about what all hathkandes were adopted by Rafi camp when Guru emerged like a pheonix in late sixties resurrecting his sagging bollywood career...with all that talk notwithstanding, the fact is that it was never like 'sleeping with the enemy' when it came either to these two giants singing together or to their mutual appreciation of each other...

Guru had gone on record saying that he was a big fan of Rafi and loved to listen to his songs...Rafi, on his part, had mentioned in an interview that amongst his contemporaries, Kishore Kumar sings very well and hamesha hi sur mein gaate hain....

Now this hamesha sur mein gaate hain is no mean achievement...the fact is that Guru never missed a sur while singing in his long career of forty years...even the most accompolished of the singers have found it difficult to not miss a sur or two while singing...even his own son, Amit Kumar, is known to have gone off key in some of the songs, not to talk of the lesser mortals of current genre...it may not be very easily noticeable to many, but the purists can pick up such gaffe....in a quick progression of different notes over a syllable or two, if one note gets missed, it might not be easy to detect it...

Hats off to both of them and fortunate were those, like me, who grew up on listening to their songs as they rolled out...

Here are four relatively rarer songs of Guru-Rafi combine (I am deliberately skipping here the common ones)...

(i) Bade Maze Se Guzar Jayegi-----Chor Sipahi 1977---Laxmikant Pyarelal----06:58@128 VBR
(ii) Yoon Na Sharma Phaila De-----Parwana 1971-----Madan Mohan-----08:18@128
(iii) Badi Rangeen Mehfil Hai, Tere Chehre Se Parda---Muqaddar 1978---Rajesh Roshan---06:22@128
(iv) O Kahan Chali, Rani Chhammak Chhallo----Love in Bombay 1975----Shankar Jaikishen---06:05@128

Much that I had resolved to make a quick temporary switch-over to jodies with female co-singers to avoid this thread getting typecast as a male jodi thread, I could not hold my self back from doing this piece about Guru and Manna Dey as a jodi….

Now Manna Dey is my favourite singer after Guru…for all his smooth and melodious voice…I wonder if there was ever any room from further improvement in songs like Tere Naina Talash Karen Jise from Talash or Zindagi Kaisi Hai Paheli fromAnand…(now don’t underestimate Guru here….for all you know he might have ended up singing this Anand song because this movie was conceptualised by Hrishikesh Mukherjee with Guru playing the Rajesh Khanna role…it is a well known story now as to how Guru, who did not want to act in this movie, turned up to sets with head shaven…and Hrishikesh da took little time to dump him off from the movie and so did the chance to sing its songs even though all the Rajesh Khanna’s songs were generally being sung by Guru those days)….i am sure though that Guru would have done an equally wonderful job on this Anand song….this is purely my views and no debate here please…all are welcome to have their own independent views and perceptions…after all it is different people, different views, different thinking is what makes this world rangeen….imagine all people being same in their views and thinking…we would have been like a kafila of mice behind the pied piper…

Manna Dey, in his own account, has said how mesmerised he was with Guru’s talent….he kept getting surprised everytime he underestimated Guru, who never failed to come up with a trump card through his sleeves….and that too mostly in the domain so well reigned by Manna Dey, that is classical singing….right from Fareb 1953 where Guru came up with complete master piece of the song Husn Bhi Hain Udaas Udaas, which originally was slated to be sung by Manna Dey (who was shocked at MD Anil Biswas’s last minute choice of Guru for it was a classical song)….

Manna Dey, who wasn’t supposedly happy at the prospect of losing out in the movie to Guru in the Padosan song Ek Chatur Naar and needed to be worked upon to agree to sing alongside Guru…was quite excited finally before the rehearsals because he knew he would be able to overshadow Guru in his own backyard….but to Manna Dey’s credit here…he was absolutely mesmerised when Guru came up with his part of singing in the song…Manna Dey himself acknowledged that it was Guru who really read the situation in the movie so well and he brought a completely new life to the song…..he couldn’t but exclaim ‘what a real genious’….now that was the hallmark of Guru….to temper the song as per the situation…

We don’t have much of Guru’s account of Manna Dey…but definitely Guru would have been equally mesmerised by Manna Dey’s finesse….such a class act he is after all…I am sure both of them were part of “mutual appreciation club”….so worthy of this appreciation by all counts…

Guru and Manna Dey have sung a good number of songs together, some 37 of them…there are popular ones from this jodi like, Ye Dosti Hum Nahin Todenge, Uljhan Hazaar Koi Daale (with Asha), Babu Samjho Ishaare, Aankhon Se Aankhon Ka Tu Jaam Liye Ja et al, which everyone loves including me…but here are three of the other songs which have both the jewels shining to glory just the same….

(i) Mere Pyale Mein Sharaab Daal De----Amir Garib 1974---MD Laxmikant Pyarelal
(ii) O Parwane O Deewane-----Zalim 1979-----MD Laxmikant Pyarelal
(iii) Hum To Hain Darshan Abhilashi---Trimurti 1974----MD RD Burman

Before we move over to a female jodi of Guru (and we would revert to male jodies again....we will keep doing this tossing over from one court to another), few quick bytes on thread so far...

Lists of KK's Male Duet Co-singers and Female Duet Co-singers have been posted in this thread...
As for the co-singers discussed so far, a list of KK songs with Rafi has been uploaded (courtesy an earlier upload on the forum)...two other co-singers, besides Rafi, discussed so far had been Bhupinder and Manna Dey...(i am leaving out Pankaj Udhaas and Danny, each of whom have sung just one song which has been discussed and uploaded)...

Here is the list of songs, which Guru and Bhupinder have sung together...there 12 songs they have paired in...
1 Achchhi Achchhi Pyari Pyari ------ Trimurty 1974 ------ Alongwith Others
2 Bawla Bawla He Mujhe Dil De ------ Mister Romeo 1973 ------ Alongwith Others
3 Chand Sa Koi Chehra Na Pehlu Mein Hota ------ Sholay 1975 ------ Alongwith Others
4 Char Dinon Ki Ye Zindgani ------ Gunehgaar 1980 ------ Alongwith Others
5 Dekho Hum Dono Ki Yaari Ka Kya Kahan ------ Double Cross 1973 ------ Duet
6 Dukki Pe Dukki Ho ------ Satte Pe Satta 1982 ------ Alongwith Others
7 Kahiye Kahan Se AAna Hua ------ Heeralal Pannalal 1978 ------ Alongwith Others
8 Pal Yahi Masti Ke Geet Chhed Do Khushi Ke ------ Hanste Khelte 1984 ------ Alongwith Others
9 Pyar Hamen Kis Mod Pe Le Aaya ------ Satte Pe Satta 1983 ------ Alongwith Others
10 Yaaro Nilam Karo Susti ------ Prem Pujari 1970 ------ Duet
11 Zindagi Haseen Hai Jhoom Jhoom Ja ------ Badhti Ka Naam Daadhi 1974 ------ Duet
12 Zindagi Milke Bitaayenge ------ Satte Pe Satta 1981 ------ Alongwith Others
