Hi, I bought "SHOLAY the making of a classic", and it was written about pancham, Anand Bakshi and the song:

For most songs that Pancham created, the tunes were composed first and then the lyrics were written. For Sholay Anand Bakshi penned the lyrics at an astonishing speed. Like Pancham, Bakshi was also at his creative peak. An army man turned songster, he was the king of lyrics in the '70s. Of the star lyricists who were his immediate predecessors, Shailandra was dead and Sahir Ludhianvi had aged into a temperamental artist. Sahir was favourite of G.P. Sippy's: GPS had first tasted alcohol at Sahir's insistence that the producer could never understand his lyrics - Mujhko na koi hosh na gham, main nashe main hoon from the movie Marine Drive - if he did not drink. But Bakshi was hitting the high notes with success like Amar Prem. Besides he had already notched up a winner in Seeta aur Geeta. He couldnt match Sahir's refined aesthetics, but he was exeptionally proficient and speedy - some of the songs were written in just an half hour - and that had its own merits. Also. Sholay had nothing in common with the sensitive, emotion-driven musicals and love stories of the 60sin which Sahir's songs had worked their magic...
...Soorma Bhopali would get to sing a song: there was room, the writers decided, for a qawwali in the comedy track of the film. But Javed suggested the chaar bhaand of Bhopal instead of a qawwali. Chaar Bhaand, a dying art, is a composition sung by four groups, instead of the qawwali's traditional two, with the audience enjoying the exchange sitting in the middle. Through Javed's contacts, a chaar bhaand group was found in Bhopal, They came to Mumbai and played for Pancham in his music room. He developed a qawwali along chaar bhaand lines - an eight-minute-long musical interplay of words and wit between four singers. The lyrics:

The singers were Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey, Bhupinder and Anand Bkahi himself. The qawwali was recorded but never shot - the film was already longer than the requisite three hours. Bakshi was the most disheartened. 'Perhaps if they had kept it' he wondered 'i might have had a career as a singer'.
