Friends,
I am starting another thread similar to the SJ-Rafi saab thread to showcase another excellent combination, that of R.D. Burman-Mohd. Rafi. R.D. Burman (also known as Panchamda to his many fans) was in my opinion a very versatile music director. He brought about a new trend and sound to film music. He was one of the greatest tune-smiths out of the second-generation composers of the Golden Era. His variety and music was excellent, he experimented with his compositions, and his songs have a lasting value. For me RD Burman is one of my Top favourite composers of all time. Pancham had a special place for Rafi saab in his repetoire and Rafi saab was his second most used male singer after Kishore Kumar. The RD-Rafi output is an important chapter in the history of HFM and they produced many golden melodies together. It was through Rafi saab that Pancham made a mark in the world of music and broke through into the big league of composers. Similar to the SJ-Rafi thread, this thread will not only be for songs, but also for trivia and any other snippets, articles etc. related to the RD-Rafi combination. Again, if you have any requests or anything you would like to add, feel free to do so here. I hope every Rafian enjoys the RD-Rafi combination as much as I do ! ![]() ![]() ![]() Prince Ali |

My pleasure Akbar bhai !
Rafi saab's last two songs in a Nasir Husain film, the NH-RD-Rafi team created many chartbuster scores together in an association that lasted more than a decade. There are two versions of this song, the first "Poocho Na Yaar Kya Hua...." one is a Rafi-Asha duet where Rafi comes in for the last stanza, and throughout the song there are dialogues by Rishi Kapoor and Padmini K. The next version "Bolo Bolo Kuch To Bolo..." is mostly a Rafi solo set at a faster pace, with Asha coming in at the beginning of the song. Film: Zamane Ko Dikhana Hai Year: 1981 Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri Poocho Na Yaar Kya Hua Bolo Bolo Kuch To Bolo Prince Ali |

Film: Zamane Ko Dikhana Hai Year: 1981 Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri Poocho Na Yaar Kya Hua Bolo Bolo Kuch To Bolo These two tracks had the fresh aura of the 80's which RD had mastered along with many of his great hits of the 80's era. The Rafi-Asha duet version was one of many of RD's finest compositions, which blended rythyms of arabian, mexican beats surounded by the RD sound. There is a solo version of "Poocho Na Yaar Kya Hua" by Rafi which starts off slowly and as soon as Rafi hits " Chak Chak Cha cha chaar " a great Disco beat comences to a superb composition! This is probably Rafi's only Disco track. It just shows Rafi had the Disco element as well, as this was the beginning of the Disco era. Its so unfortunate Rafi had passed away at that time, coz Rafi had what it takes for the 80's era. |

As other composers were trying to search for "the voice", Pancham was also experimenting with voices like Shabbir Kumar, Mohd. Aziz etc. in an attempt to bring some of that Rafi magic back, but ofcourse clones will remain clones, no one could attain the magic and perfection of Rafi saab. If Rafi had lived I am sure we would have seen alot more from this combo. RD in the 80's was not the same of the previous two decades, he could not repeat the same success even though he tried to compose more from a non-western angle and stick to traditional indian roots, and the exit of Rafi saab did not help either. He did have some great albums to his credit though. If you look at Nasir Husain-RD films after Rafi saab's exit, even they do not reach the same standards as previous musicals. About the disco compositions, Rafi saab could sing anything, from disco and pop to classical songs and bhajans, he was truly the "complete singer". Prince Ali |
