Friends,
I am starting another thread similar to the SJ-Rafi saab thread to showcase another excellent combination, that of R.D. Burman-Mohd. Rafi. R.D. Burman (also known as Panchamda to his many fans) was in my opinion a very versatile music director. He brought about a new trend and sound to film music. He was one of the greatest tune-smiths out of the second-generation composers of the Golden Era. His variety and music was excellent, he experimented with his compositions, and his songs have a lasting value. For me RD Burman is one of my Top favourite composers of all time. Pancham had a special place for Rafi saab in his repetoire and Rafi saab was his second most used male singer after Kishore Kumar. The RD-Rafi output is an important chapter in the history of HFM and they produced many golden melodies together. It was through Rafi saab that Pancham made a mark in the world of music and broke through into the big league of composers. Similar to the SJ-Rafi thread, this thread will not only be for songs, but also for trivia and any other snippets, articles etc. related to the RD-Rafi combination. Again, if you have any requests or anything you would like to add, feel free to do so here. I hope every Rafian enjoys the RD-Rafi combination as much as I do ! ![]() ![]() ![]() Prince Ali |

"We were having a sitting at Pancham's bungalow in Khar. Pancham, Majrooh saab, Nasir Husain, Shammi Kapoor and I were there. Pancham sat at the harmonium and began to present songs for the film (Teesri Manzil). He started singing Deewana Mujhsa Nahin, which is actually a Nepali folk song - O Kancha Maatailo.
When Pancham sang the first line, Shammi jumped up and began to sing the Nepali song. Everyone fell silent, we were all thinking, that's the end of the music of this film. Then Pancham took his taaveez which he wore around his neck, kissed it once, touched it to his forehead and started the next song, which was Aaja Aaja, and Shammi just erupted with joy and everyone went ballistic with a huge sense of relief though". - Asha Bhosle Prince Ali |

I have a RDB interview on video where he mentions the musical sittings of Tessri Manzil. When he played the Nepalese tune first up Shammi K rejected instantly because Jaikishan had already played this tune to him in a music sitting for another film. He was very hesitant with RDB scoring the music as he was replacing Shammi's favourites SJ. He only okayed RDB when he went to the recording studio and heard what he thought was Rafi & Asha rehearsing Aaja aaja mein hoon pyar tera.....he instantly loved the rock n roll feel of the song and asked RDB to record it straight away, thats when RDB informed him that the song has been recored already. Interesting fact is that Shammi K later chose RDB for his maiden directoral venture Manoranjan even though Shankar was still around.regs saj |
