Friends,
I am starting this thread to share gems from the Shankar Jaikishan - Mohd. Rafi combo which was truly one of the most outstanding and special combinations ever in the history of HFM. Along with the songs, I will also upload bits and pieces of info from interviews, articles etc. about this great partnership. If any of you have any SJ-Rafi gems that you would like to share, or any other info, thoughts, opinions, requests etc. on SJ-Rafi, please feel free to share them here as well. Rafi saab and SJ both started their careers around the same time and both reached the greatest heights of success together. The combination produced so many wonderful melodies and a mind boggling variety for over two decades. First gem is one of the earliest Lata-Rafi duets composed by SJ. There is another version sung separately by Lata. Nai Zindagi Se Pyar - (with Lata Mangeshkar) Film: Shikast Year: 1953 Lyrics: Shailendra Attached image(s) ![]() Prince Ali |

My pleasure folks !
![]() Here is an interesting bit of trivia: Rafi Saab's Debut with SJ If you look at a chronology of their films together, you will see that this partnership started out quite slowly before it really took off. The reason for this is the tradition of mostly female based songs in movies of those years and in SJ's case a whole lot of songs for Lata as well as their earlier preference for Mukesh and Talat Mahmood. Nevertheless, earlier SJ films had great Rafi songs as well. The following is a list of SJ's earlier films from Barsaat in 1949 and the number of Rafi songs in each film: Barsaat : 1 Awara : 2 Badal : 0 Kali Ghata : 1 Nagina : 2 Daag : 0 Parbat : 1 Poonam : 0 Aah : 0 Aas : 0 Aurat : 0 Naya Ghar : 0 Patita : 0 Shikast : 2 Badshah : 0 Boot Polish : 2 Mayur Pankh : 0 Pooja : 5 (first time Rafi sings 3 or more songs for SJ in a film) Total songs from 1949-1954 (18 films): 16 After Pooja, Rafi's presence in SJ's music is still here and there: Seema : 2 Shree 420: 1 Basant Bahar: 2 Chori Chori: 2 Halaku: 2 Kismat Ka Khel: 0 New Delhi : 0 Patrani : 0 Rajhat : 1 Begunah : 0 Kathputli : 0 Baghi Sipahi : 0 Yahudi : 1 Anari : 0 Choti Behan : 1 Kanhaiya : 0 Love Marriage : 5 Total songs from 1954-1959 (17 films): 17 Total Songs from 1949-1959 (35 films): 33 Looking ahead: Main Nashe Main Hoon : 1 Shararat : 2 Ujala : 1 Then in Shammi Kapoor's College Girl (1960) we have 6 Rafi songs and the rest as they say is history. So looking at the whole picture, it was nearly 40 films and a full decade before the ultimate combination of Mohd. Rafi and Shankar Jaikishan took off !. Prince Ali |
