I am starting this thread to share gems from the Shankar Jaikishan - Mohd. Rafi combo which was truly one of the most outstanding and special combinations ever in the history of HFM. Along with the songs, I will also upload bits and pieces of info from interviews, articles etc. about this great partnership. If any of you have any SJ-Rafi gems that you would like to share, or any other info, thoughts, opinions, requests etc. on SJ-Rafi, please feel free to share them here as well. Rafi saab and SJ both started their careers around the same time and both reached the greatest heights of success together. The combination produced so many wonderful melodies and a mind boggling variety for over two decades. First gem is one of the earliest Lata-Rafi duets composed by SJ. * Director Prayag Raaj yelled Yahoo in Chahe Koi Mujhe Junglee (Junglee) * It is Shankar's voice saying Ayaya Sukoo Sukoo in Ayaya Karoon Main Kya Sukoo Sukoo (Junglee) * SJ utilized Rafi saab for all three Kapoor brothers: Raj Kapoor (Ek Dil Sau Afsane & Mera Naam Joker), Shammi Kapoor & Shashi Kapoor. * Subhash Ghai lip-synched Rafi saab's Babul Kaun Ghadi (Umang) * Yaad Na Jaaye (Dil Ek Mandir) was derived from a spanish song Besame Mucho. Raju Bharatan also mentioned the song was based on Raag Kirvani. * The famous western song Margarita was the inspiration for Kaun Hai Jo Sapnon Mein Aaya (Jhuk Gaya Aasman). * Rafi saab sang two non-film English songs for SJ. One to the tune of Baharon Phool Barsao, the second to Hum Kaale Hai To * From about 174 Hindi films of SJ, Rafi saab sang in 123 of them. * He sang 377 total songs, with 222 solos, 111 female duets and the remaining mixed and female duets. * Of the 377 songs, 103 were for Shammi Kapoor films, 61 for Rajendra Kumar films, and 29 for Dev Anand films. A total of 193, over 50% of his work for SJ. * Rafi saab's second highest total tally and second highest duets with Lata were by SJ. (Highest for both with Laxmikant-Pyarelal) * First song in Barsaat (1949), last released song in Inteqaam Ki Aag & Kaanch Ki Deewar (1986) * Two films had Rafi saab in all songs (solos & duets) - Dil Tera Diwana and Brahmachari * Beti Bete had the highest number of songs for Rafi saab - nine * Filmfare Awards won: 1961 - Sasural - Teri Pyaari Pyaari Surat Ko Kisiki Nazar Na Lage 1966 - Suraj - Baharon Phool Barsao, Mera Mehboob Aaya Hai 1968 - Brahmachari - Dil Ke Jharoke Mein * Filmfare Award nominations: 1962 - Professor - Ae Gulbadan Ae Gulbadan 1968 - Brahmachari - Main Gaaon Tum So Jaao 1973 - Naina - Humko Tau Jaan Se Pyaari Hai Tumhari Aankhen * SJ Rafi songs with actresses: Saira Banu - April Fool, Aman Sharmila Tagore - An Evening in Paris Sadhna - Budtameez * Rafi saab also sang a Hindi song in an English language film of SJ - Bombay Talkies * Most unusual film with SJ songs - Film Hi Film which contained clips of songs of unreleased films.
