Friends,
I am starting this thread to share gems from the Shankar Jaikishan - Mohd. Rafi combo which was truly one of the most outstanding and special combinations ever in the history of HFM. Along with the songs, I will also upload bits and pieces of info from interviews, articles etc. about this great partnership. If any of you have any SJ-Rafi gems that you would like to share, or any other info, thoughts, opinions, requests etc. on SJ-Rafi, please feel free to share them here as well. Rafi saab and SJ both started their careers around the same time and both reached the greatest heights of success together. The combination produced so many wonderful melodies and a mind boggling variety for over two decades. First gem is one of the earliest Lata-Rafi duets composed by SJ. There is another version sung separately by Lata. Nai Zindagi Se Pyar - (with Lata Mangeshkar) Film: Shikast Year: 1953 Lyrics: Shailendra Attached image(s) ![]() Prince Ali |

This next song is inspired from the Beatles hit With a Little Help From My Friends. As always, SJ adaptations sounded better than the original. The song has some great saxophone pieces and a great rhythm. SJ's popular Kishore solo from this Shammi Kapoor/Hema malini starrer, "Zindagi Ek Safar" was the number one song of 1971. There is an interesting excerpt related to this song:
Jaikishan used to present a framework to the artiste and then expect the artist to develop the song. If it did not appeal to him, he would change it. Take for example the Andaz (1971) song Dil Use Do Jo Jaan De De. Asha Bhosle, while rehearsing, rendered the song a trifle flat. Explaining to her he said: "A house can be built by bricks alone. Yet to make it a beautiful home, it must be sufficiently decorated. What I have given you is a brick structure. To decorate it is up to you". What this indicates is that Jaikishan was open to changes and improvisations at the last moment. - Prof. Suhaaschandra Kulkarni Dil Use Do Jo Jaan De De (with Asha Bhosle) Film: Andaz Year: 1971 Lyrics: Hasrat Jaipuri Prince Ali |
