Indeed a very lovely duet. Naushad once mentioned that while recording this song "Awaaz de kahan hai", Noor Jehan would sing her lines and then look into the eyes of Surendra with naughty expressions. Surendra was very self conscious and thus was unable to get his notes correct. Thus, her requested Naushad to stop Noor Jehan from giving him naughty looks. The song obviously remains a classic. Naushad also recalled that he kept on working hard on this tune for days, then when he was tired he went out and kept on walking until a haunting tune took shape in his mind.
When Malika-e-Tarannum Noor Jehan came to India years later to celebrate 50 glorious years of film music, she sang this song in "Mortal men, immortal melodies" concert and mesmerized the listeners. In the concert, she sang both the stanzas, her portion and Surendra's portion as well.
