In the early sixties the songs of the Shammi Kapoor/Mala Sinha starrer "Dil Tera Deewana" were very popular. But only recently did I discover a virtually unheard gem from this movie: a soulful duet recorded in the heydays of Rafi-sahab and Lata-ji.

I get goose-pimples when I hear these divine voices together yet again in a "new" song. Listen to them wafting over the high notes and effortlessly descending to the low notes!

Shuklas-ji:

Although I listen to and enjoy a lot of classical music, I readily admit I am not knowledgeable about it. My yardstick as an uneducated music lover is whether the piece appeals to my ears, irrespective of the fame of the artiste and the name of raag.

Hence I stand in awe when someone (like you) can hear a piece of music and immediately identify the raag. Having grown up listening to film music, I tend to do the exact reverse: I hear a raag and then say, "Ah! That reminds of such-and-such film song"!

I've even tried to teach myself by listening to Music Today's tapes that educate the listener about Indian classical music. Also went to the library and borrowed records that similarly explain western classical. Despite that, I am none the wiser!

Some of my favourite classical pieces are:

Shiv Kumar and Zakir at Rang Bhavan, performing Raag Kaunsi Kanhra, appropriately titled 'When Time Stood Still".

Hariprasad expounding Raag Malkauns

Ustad Vilayat's rendition of Raag Yaman

Your inputs and U/Ls are greatly appreciated.

Cheers --- Unni
