Rajesh Khanna, The Super Star
Rajesh Khanna was dubbed as the first Super Star of the Hindi screen. In a reign of five years, from 1969 to 1973, he made a hit after hit that was unprecedented in the Hindi cinema history. He was working on stage when he won the talent contest by the United Producers of Bombay. These were the 10 producers who formed a team to select new talent as an answer to escalating salaries for the established stars. Rajesh's first movie was Chetan Anand's "Aakhri Khat" released in 1966. Inspite of a great director and some beautiful music, the film was a commercial failure. But things changed when in 1969, Shakti Samanta's "Aradhana" was released. The movie with its beautiful music and strong performance by Sharmila Tagore created history. In Rajesh Khanna, a star was born. And for the next few years, he couldn't do anything wrong. Rajesh made nearly 130 movies in his professional career. One of our Forum members, Debjyoti, gave me this idea to start a thread on the songs of his albums. By happy coincidence I have CDs of almost all of his movie albums. In the coming months, I will start sharing these albums in chronological order. Here is part one of Rajesh Khanna's filmography ... Attached image(s) |

Roti (1974)
Here is a movie that came from Manmohan Desai film factory. He was on a roll during those years. He had 13 (?) jubilee hits in a row, a record still not broken. Many years back American television's "60 Minutes" program had an episode on Indian movies, in particular Hindi movies. In that broadcast they had an interview with Desai, Amitabh Bachchan, and others. The moderator complemented Desai on his unique achievement and told Desai that even Spielberg couldn't match such a record. Desai's "Roti" is one of those jubilee hits. It had the hit pair Mumtaz & Rajesh Khanna and some fine music from ever so dependable Laxmikant & Pyarelal. I saw the movie and I didn't care much for it even though it had its moments. Here are the songs ... This post has been edited by swarapriya: Aug 2 2009, 11:00 PM Attached image(s) |

Aakraman (1975)
This movie has some great songs by Laxmikant & Pyarelal. Rajesh Khanna was a guest star. Interestingly, there was an English movie made in 1979, named "Hanover Street", that parallelled this movie which came four years earlier. The English movie starred Leslie Ann-Down, Harrison Ford, and Christopher Plummer. First half of both movies are just about the same but in the second half they drift apart. The English movie was written and directed by Peter Hyams; so it was not from any hitherto published novel. LP exploits Kishore's singing strengths to full extent in this movie. Kishore has four beautiful solos and a duet, all just great. Anand Bakshi Saab also supplies some great lyrics. Because of the number of songs in this movie, I am uploading them in back-to-back posts. Here is the first set of songs ... Thank You for Aakraman Swarapriya - heart in heart I just wished that even Aaj Chalo Mil Kar should have been given to KK... Thanks for the comment. Asha and Mahendra had some great duets over the years, but this is certainly not one of them. This is out and out Kishoreda's album. And some great lyrics by Bakshi saab. Especially I love the richness of lyrics of the songs "Fauji Gaya" and "Woh Ek Haseen Ladki". Some inspired writing. Cheers, Swarapriya |

Superb music of a flop film but the song that stands out for the purists is " prem hai kya"........A very difficult composition superbly sung by the king. This song is nothing less than a classic, a very difficult song, sung with perfection as always by Rafisaab. PLAYBACK SINGING STARTS AND ENDS WITH RAFISAAB.
