Starting a new thread on what other famous celebrities have to say about shankar Jaikishan !

Frds SJ's music might be very popular but their "own names" are hardly known outside music circles or beyond genuine music fans.Media too continues to ignore SJ's contribution to Hindi film music and keeps on promoting selected few !

In this thread I will be posting famous comments made by celebrities and artists on Shankar jaikishan. These comments are enough proof to know the caliber of Shankar Jaikishan ! and their MAMMOTH contribution to Hindi film music !
People may ignore what a SJ fan says but they cant ignore what these legends have to say about SHANKAR JAIKISHAN !

"[I believe no one can equal the music composed by Shankar-Jaikishan. They composed classical songs, cabarets, dance numbers, love songs, sad and happy songs. Few composers have been able to match their range. Their music has extended the life of many films - films that would have otherwise been forgotten. So many of their films enjoyed a twenty-five week run. I would tease them and say their initials 'SJ' did not stand for Shankar-Jaikishan but for Silver Jubilee. "

Frds contribution of SHANKAR JAIKISHAN in manna dey's career is gigantic ! Manna dey is very humble , he never hesitates to appreciate his contemporaries and other artists. and even for Shankar jaikishan he is not short of any words ( though sometimes media pple do try to put names into his mouth. eg X ke saath apka kaam kasa tha )

Q Who are your favourite composers among the seniors?
My all-time favourites are Shankar-Jaikishan, and it is sad that todays generation isnt aware of their work and are forgetting them. The media is promoting just one or two composers from among the legends, which is not right. Even today when I hear a Hai na bolo bolo from Andaz, I can sense their calibre in the individual violin and other pieces and the way they have been composed and integrated, even though the song is nowhere among their best.Their versatility is phenomenal. I also particularly love the works of Laxmikant-Pyarelal and Madan Mohan.

Q .Do you regret coming in an era when you cannot sing for them or any other legends?
Well, if I could have sung for Shankar-Jaikishan, I wouldn�€™t have minded missing out on all the others!

Q In the song Thakun basli maay ga, you sound remarkably like the Lata of the early ‘50s
................The utpatti (origin) happened with Noorjehanji and within a few years came Lata Mangeshkar. In 1949, similarly, Shankar-Jaikishan gave us the origin of film music as a distinct entity with Barsaat. To date, every singer and composer is following their base or patterns, and let’s face it, there is no choice but to follow them!
Q. You seem to have made your own profound study of Hindi film music down the decades.
I have, because I am very much into music. Look at even the classical songs of S-J – they never sounded like the typical classical songs, and yet they were pure classical too and yet had that unique film flavour.......

Read what Sarod Maestro Akbar ali khan, who passed away recently , had to say about Shankar Jaikishan
. While discussing the greatest composer's name, he gives few old names including that of Shankar Jaikishan as among the best from HFM !

ON ARR being the best he himself gives few examples of SJ songs :-

He claims, “Did not A.R. Rahman compose the hit number ‘Aye Ajnabi’ for ‘Dil Se’? It is a direct lift of Shanker Jaikishan’s immortal number, ‘Manzil Wohi Hain’ from ‘Kathputli’ in 1957 rendered melodiously by Subir Sen. Even his ‘Chal Chaiyyan Chaiyyan’ is very similar to Shanker Jaikishan’s ‘Oh Maiya Bata Maiya’ from ‘Shree 420’. He just fastened the beats.�


Our legendary composers have never received international recognition in the real sense of the term. Yes, (Shankar)Jaikishan’s tunes have been hummed in Soviet Russia, Eastern Europe and China. But did Hollywood and Western Europe ever consider his or the others’ worth?�

Let me make an extreme but true statement: apart from learning from my dad, main Lata Mangeshkar ki awaaz sunkar music director banaa hoon. For me the first song that changed my life was Lataji’s Rasik balma composed by Jaikishan. Time stopped for me when I first heard the song. Even today, subconsciously, I search for a 25-year-old Latabai in every singer! I read the Screen interview of Radha Mangeshkar and I was amazed at the refined sensibility of a 20-something singer - I guess that is the magic of the Mangeshkar blood! When I read her views on Shankar-Jaikishan, I feel that she and I could be in perfect sync. If she is willing to sing Hindi film songs, I want to work with her!

It is well known fact that Next Numero uno after SHankar Jaikishan , Laxmikant pyarelal were huge fan of SJ. Intially theynot only modeled their music on SJ but also their dress and looks. LP ruleld for close to two decades . What more proof one does want when LP says that there is no one as SHANKAR JAIKISHAN !

Which composer would you rate as the best from the 50's and the 60's?
Look, I don't believe in comparisons. Like I said before, each composer brings
to music all that he has and it is not his fault if sometimes the films don't do
well or the composer doesn't get his due. Having said that, Laxmiji and I liked
Shankar Jaikishan the most. They are the only composers whom we never assisted
or played for. Isn't it strange that both Laxmiji and I liked the same composer
duo the best? Just shows how much we were in sync when it came to matters
musical. So fond of them we were that both of us used to copy all their
mannerisms.

What was it that SJ had which other music directors didn't?
You tell me what they didn't have! Is there a single flaw you can see in them as
composers? Is there any other composer who consistently gave good music in so
many films? Is there a single kind of music they've not made? If Naushad saab
composed Baiju Bawra SK followed with Basant Bahar. What superb music they gave
for Raj Kapoor films! In fact, I'll be honest and say that while we won the
best composer award for Dosti in 1964, I liked Shankar Jaikishan's score for
Sangam better!
....They never copied anyone else. ....
