(Majrooh) Solva Saal (1958)
This is another movie adapted from Frank Capra's famous English movie "It Happened One Night (1934)" that starred Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable. It was already made as "Chori Chori (1956)" with Nargis and Raj Kapoor which was a huge hit. This one with Waheeda and Dev was followed by "Basant (1960)" starring Nutan and Shammi Kapoor. Much later Mahesh Bhatt made the same story as "Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin" in 1991 with Pooja Bhatt and Aamir Khan. The fascination for this story has yielded some very successful films but invariably many beautiful musical songs. Raj Khosla was back again directing this with young Waheeda and debonair Dev looking like million bucks. This was Khosla’s third film as a director and also third one in a row with Dev. Raj’s fourth and fifth films also starred Dev. “Solva Saal” has beautiful music composed by the inimitable Burmanda. RD was the assistant music director. One can see his signature harmonica tune all over in the popular hit song "Hai Apna Dil Toh Aawaara". This song with Hemantda’s beautiful swinging singing takes ones breath away. I am uploading this and other songs from this fine album in two back-to-back posts. The first post contains all songs from the film plus a snippet. (Shakeel) Mere Mehboob (1963)
There were two big reasons that made this movie such a big winner. First it was Sadhana's ravishingly beautiful but charmingly disarming simple looks that made millions fall in love with her. The second and an equally important reason was Naushadji's unforgettable score. Of course it was no "Baiju Bawra", but how many times one will exceed in their lifetime such a magnificent score. Each song from the film became a major hit with both versions of the title song taking the crown. I am uploading these songs in three back-to-back posts. The first two posts contain all songs from the film and a couple of specials. The final post contains some instrumentals.
