Very sad news indeed. As a tribute to this great vocalist, I am attaching her famous Komal Rishabh Asavari as a 128K encoded mp3 file. Duration 4:09. For a short piece, the impact is immense.

Sorry to hear of the demise of Gangubai, even though she lived to ripe old age. She was one of the finest classical vocalists of the 20th century...heard Banata Ban Aaye immediately on reading this news....

She hailed from Dharwad/Hubli area which has produced some of the finest singers.

The last of the titans left of that Dharwad school is perhaps Bhimsen Joshi.

Great to see Gangubai's music being put up here! A small amendment, if I may: these 78 rpm recordings are not thumri-s, they are khayals. The only semi-classical piece in the lot is the Jogiya, but even that is the bhajan "hari kaa bhed na paayaa" and not the thumri "piyaa ke milan ki aas" which appeared often in her ouvre.

Her 78 rpm records were released under two names: most of them under the name "Gandhari Hangal", and a few under the name "Bai Gangoobai of Hubli". I have a couple of records released in either name.

The title of the CD I have says the title is "Golden Milestones."
The quality and the duration of each track definitely suggests that this is a compilation of old 78s.
