Hamara Forums _ Mohd Rafi _ Do You Know Any Pair Of Almost Identically Tuned Songs Of Rafi Saab?
Posted by: venkat Jun 19 2007, 07:04 PM
Friends,
It was only after I joined HF that I came to know this. There are at least twelve pairs of Rafi Saab's songs which are almost identical in tune.
PAIR-I:
1. "Ek Chameli Ki Mandwe Tale"--Film: Cha Cha Cha(1964)---MD:Iqbal Quereshi--Rafi and Asha
2. "Aaj Mausam Ki Masti Mein Gaaye Pawan"--Film:Banarasi Thug(1962)---MD:Iqbal Quereshi---Rafi and Lata
PAIR-II:
1. "Tu Hind Bane Ya na Musalmaan Banega, Insaan Ki Aulad"---Film:Dhool Ka Phool(1959)---MD:N.Datta---Rafi
2. "Kya Kya Na Sitam Tujh Pe Huve Mehlon Ki Raani"---Film:Mohini(1957)---MD:N.Datta---Rafi
Incidentally, within each of these Pairs, the MDs are the same!
Firends, please let me know if you know any other such almost identical pairs. Mind you, only almost identical pairs. Not similar pairs, of which there are plenty!
Venkat
P.S. Another seven or eight pairs have been discovered in the following posts!

Main Kal Phir Milungi (Lata & Rafi) - Dr. Vidya & Kisi Ki Mohabbat Mein (Asha & Rafi) - Kaise Kahoon
Both have the same exact tune, both are composed by S.D Burman.

Incidentally, it was only yesterday that I heard the song from Banarsi Thug and I was telling everyone at home that this sounds identical to Ek Chameli Ke Mandve Taley - the second being the most popular. And here you are with the interesting info that such songs do exist!
Interesting, Venkatji.

I find similarities in these two songs mentioned below - the feel, the tune and even the lyrics are just about the same in both the songs.
Raja Saab - Kisi Meharbaan Ki Nazar Dhoondhte Hain
Boot Polish - Tumhaare Hain Tumse Daya Maangte Hain

What about these two :-
Film Hi Film - Kitna Rangeen Hai Yeh Chaand Sitaaron Ka Samaa
Nayi Umr Ki Nayi Fasal - Aaj Ki Raat Badi Shokh Badi Natkhat Hai

Friends,
Could someone please upload these two songs mentioned by Prince Ji, as I am not able to exactly place them? The idea is to hear them and see whether they are as 'identical' as the Iqbal Quereshi pair and N.Datta pair that I mentioned in my first post.Coming to the other songs mentioned by USR Ji, Paresh Ji and Nasar Ji, my humble view is that they are similar in some parts such as mainly the Mukhda, but are not almost identical (both in Mukhda and Antara) like the two pairs that I mentioned.
Regarding Anupama Ji's Kitna Rangeen song and Aaj Ki Raat Badi song, no doubt, they have a great amount of similarity, but still fall short in the extent of identicalness. While I know her Boot Polish song well enough, I need to hear her Raja Saab song once again to understand the extent of similarity.
Why I am probing this subject so hard is that I wish to compile a list of such almost identical pairs (not just similar pairs).
Venkat
PS. On a rethink, Paresh Motiwala Ji's Yeh Hawa Yeh Raat (Talat) and Tujhe Kya Sunao (Rafi) have a very great degree of identicality both in Mukhda and Antaras.

Listen to the opening stanza of these three compositions - i bet you'll notice the similarity.
Tumhen Husn Deke Khuda Ne
Pal Do Pal Ka Saath Hamara
And the third is a nonfilm Gujarati song ( I'll be u/ling it on Auld Lang Syne in a short while.)

Sajdah Ji,
As I mentioned in my very first post, pairs which are similar in parts, either in Mukhda or in Antara, are plenty. I am sure that you are with me when I said the two pairs (one of Iqbal Quereshi and the other of N.Datta) that I mentioned in my first post are almost identical both in Mukhada and Antaras.
I am simply seeking more of such almost identical pairs, not just similar ones in parts.
Well, Prince Ji's Dawa about the Kaise Kahoon duet and the Dr.Vidya duet needs to be examined, after we get the Dr.Vidya song also.

Here is the song from 78 rpm record
Gham hon ke sitam tu kabhi aansoo na bahana
jhuk jaayega ik din tere kadmon pe Zamana.
SINGER : MOHD RAFI
MOVIE : NAI MAA (1960)
MUSIC : RAVI

This song was also sung by Suman Kalyanpuri.

Agreed, Mahesh Ji, though there is some variance at "Aansoo Na Bahana" part. I think if "Tu Hind Bane" is 100, Kya Kya Sitam is 95 and this "Gham Ho Ke Sitam" is 87, in terms of identicality.
Thanks very much, Mahesh Ji.

Venkat bhai,
A few days ago, we had a brief discussion on the following songs in another thread:
http://www.hamaraforums.com/index.php?s=&showtopic=26947&view=findpost&p=379447
Bambai ka Chor (1962): hai bahaar-e-bagh-e-duniyaa chand roz, chand roz - Rafi
Aadmi Aur Insaan (1969): zindagi ke rang kayi re, saathi re - Asha
The more I hear these songs, they sound almost identical tunes. What do you think?

Prince Ji,
The examination is over! The result: both the S.D.Burman songs cited by you are identical in tune, both in Mukhda and Antaras. I do not have to add even the 'almost' to the 'identical'!
Hats off to you, Prince Ji, for giving me and other friends a genuine third pair of this nature! I really appreciate your musical sense.

Venkat
P.S. Incidentally, the Kaise Kahoon(1964) song was uploaded above by Lakshmi and the other Dr.Vidya(1962) song was uploaded by Nasar Ji. Must downloads for all, because they are nice songs and more importantly, because of their identicality in tune!

Hari Bhai,
I feel you are certainly right as far as the Mukhdas are concerned. But, I do not remember the Antara of the Asha song (Zindagi Ki Rang Kayi Re) to give my comment on the Antaras. But, if you found the Antaras too as very similar, then there is a case to include them in the list. But then, they are by different singers!

Thank You as well for pointing out the other two pairs, it is a great find, and shows you have a fantastic ear for music !.
Would you happen to know why SDB composed the same exact tune for both song situations ?.
It is not as if he had a dearth of tunes, and I doubt he would have forgotten that he composed the same tune earlier.
What could be the reason for this ?.

Good find - PA - they are indeed identical !! And thanks to Venkat for starting off this interesting search.
1964 was the period when SDBurman was laid up...he stopped taking up new films and and had difficulty in completing his films on hand. It is possible that faced with this situation, this idea may have occurred to someone - to use an old (and not so well known) tune fitted with new words - with the approval ( or not !! ) of the producer/director.

Though not exactly complying with the title of this thread - I felt that this pair of twins are worthy of mention - for general interest
These two tunes from the film Gazal (1964) by Madan Mohan - are essentially from the same basic idea - and their lyrics are similar too (in fact, their last antaras have identical lyrics) but Madan Mohan has brought in so many variations into them ( and the Rafi one is a little faster also) that they are certainly not 'identical' and are actually two different songs. Perhaps they were two very closely related 'versions' of the tune for a song - and he may have liked both so much that he decided to use both rather than making a choice between them. The songs are :
Naghma_o_sher ki saugaat kise pesh karoon, Lata, Gazal 1964, Madan Mohan_Sahir
Ishq ki garmiye jazbaat kise pesh karoon, Rafi, Gazal 1964, Madan Mohan_Sahir
Sri
P.S. Sahir must have been in love with the 'kise pesh karoon' phrase - it was used in as many as 3 songs in the same film !! The third one (other than the two mentioned above, being 'Rang aur noor ki baaraat kise pesh karoon' )

Sincere thanks, Sri, for sharing those strong 'Ghazal' resemblances.
PA Ji and Sri,
Continuing on this identical pair brought out by PA, when I d/led from here and listened to the Kaise Kahoon song(Rafi & Asha) first, I found that I knew it quite well. But, subsequently, when I d/led and listened to the Dr.Vidya song (Rafi & Lata), I could not recall having heard it at all earlier. So, it is possible that the earlier Dr. Vidya (1962) song somehow did not become very popular or become 'a hit'. So, it could be that SDB had thought that this tune, very nice one that it is, deserves one more attempt at popularisation! And he repeated it in 1964 (two years later) in Kaise Kahoon!
One more thing. See the similarity of this S.D.Burman pair with the other Iqbal Quereshi pair! In both pairs, the earlier song belongs to 1962 and the later one belongs to 1964. And in both pairs, the earlier song is by Rafi-Lata and the later one by Rafi-Asha. What is more, in both pairs the later song is more popular than the earlier song!
Come to think of it, even in the N.Datta pair, the later song (Tu Hind Bane Ya) is more popular than the earlier song(Kya Kya Na Sitam).

Sri ji & Venkat ji,
Can you please confirm this. I believe SDB had a heart attack around 1963 and lost three or four films including "Gumnaam" and "Love In Tokyo" which eventually went to SJ (and what great music they produced), as well as "Baharein Phir Bhi Aayenge" (great music by OPN). Dev stayed with him for Guide and the result was arguably his best album ever.

Venkatji there are many such incidents where the MDs have used their earlier tunes and
the later ones were much more popular than the earlier songs.
For example Roshan used the tune of the song...mera dil kahaan hai..asha..chandni chowk
again in rahein na rahein hum...mamta...lata.
madan mohan used....aankhon aankhon main ho gaye mast ishaare...khajanchi..asha
again in....nainon waali ne hai mera dil luta...lata...mera saya.
SDB used same tunes with slight variations in many songs
1. saari khushiaan saath aayin aap jab aaye...shamshad in jeevan jyoti (53)
reused in tum re sang to rain bitaayi...sagina...kishor and lata
2. tasveerein banati hain....asha in jeevan jyoti
re-used in dil pukare aa re aa re...jewel thief
Sri Bhai
paish karoon.....
remember the mushaaira in the movie gazal.....
khatte angoor ke baagaat kise paish karoon
apni mummy se jaake poochh apna haath kisey paish karoon

How could you all miss out on this classic pair! Sung about 6-7 years apart Rafisaab sounds the same, if not better. RDB is the common factor, so is the music, so are the lyrics, both songs hits! Anything more identical?
1. Koi aur duniya mein tumsa haseen-Pyar Ki Kahani-Rafi-RDB
2. Maina poocha chand se-Abdullah-Rafi-RDB

Im4afi Ji,
I knew the Parwardigar-e-Alam song from Hatim Tai(1956) earlier. Now, I have d/led and listened to your "Choota Watan Hamahara" song from Khuda Ka Banda(1957). I am happy to find that both are almost identical both in Mukhda and Antaras, except that there is just a 5% variation in the Antaras. But, in my view , this pair qualifies to be in our list of almost identical pairs! So, we have the fourth one in our list!
Incidentally, here too, both the songs in the pair were composed by S.N.Tripathi.
Thanks very much.

Thank you, very much. Before I d/l these, could you confirm from your side whether these are almost identical
both in Mukhda and Antaras. From memory, I can gauge that the Mukhdas are certainly almost identical, but I have no clue nor memory of their Antaras.

Venkat
Sri Bhai
paish karoon.....
remember the mushaaira in the movie gazal.....
khatte angoor ke baagaat kise paish karoon
apni mummy se jaake poochh apna haath kisey paish karoon
upload these songs.............mahesh..........pleeeease

Im4afi Ji,
We are looking for
two songs from two different films with almost identical tunes,
both in Mukhda and Antaras. Also, preferably, there should be Rafi Saab in both!
As far as pairs of
two songs from the same film with almost identical tunes are conerned, there are plenty. Examples: Ehsan Mera Hoga--by Rafi and Lata separately in Junglee ; Main Kamsin Hun Nadaan Hoon--by Rafi and Lata separately in Aayi Milan Ki Bela, etc.

Inteqam Bhai,
Sincere thanks for participating and uploading two beautiful OPN songs. Of course, as these are well-known ones, I knew both of them earlier. But, I have specially played and heard them again.
But, Inteqam Bhai, in my humble view, the tunes of these two songs are not almost identical, either in Mukhda or Antaras. Well, I do agree with you that they are very similar in the feel, mood and flavor.
Regards,
Venkat
P.S. Yes, I have just noticed that you have uploaded both the songs of the SDB's identical pair (the Kaise Kahoon-1964 one and the Dr.Vidya-1962 one), as early as June 13, 2007 itself in your Rafi thread. Good work, Inteqam Bhai.

Shanawaz Ji, thanks for the post. But, what we are looking for are not just distinct similarities in flavor or feel, nor even idenicality only in Mukhda.
To qualify, both the songs should be almost identical in tune both on Mukhda and the Antaras. The six pairs we have now do meet these criteria.
Do tell us if you have a pair that strictly complies with these criteria. I know your 2 and 3 pairs do not qualify. But, in your first pair, I know the Film song well, but not the Non-filmi song. If you feel these two are almost identical in tune in Mukhda and also Antara, please u/l both the songs.
Thanks.

SN Ji,
After hearing this non-filmi Pagal Chanda song and Chitralekha(1964)'s Rafi-Asha duet (Chha Gaye Badal Neel Gagan), I agree that there is very great similarity of tune both in Mukhda and Antaras, though not as much as in some of the earlier six almost identical pairs. But, I think we can place this pair in our list.

Friends,
Any more pairs of Rafi songs that are almost identical in tune, both in Mukhda and the Antaras?
Venkat
Venkat Ji,
Here are 2 more 100% identical songs(very popular) :-
[1]
Madan Mohan Sahab & Rafi
Yahi Hai Tamanna
Tere Ghar Ke Samne
Meri Jaan Jaaye
Meri Jaan Jaaye, Haaaye .
R.D.Burman Sahab & Kishore
Sagar Kinaare
Dil Ye Pukaare
Tu Jo Nahin To Mera
Koii Nahin Hai Haaye.
[2]
The second case is a History in itself. (Earlier I have penned it in Lata-Forum).
S.D.Burman Sahab had assisted C.Ramchander Sahab. When Burman Dada started composing independently, he created one melodous tune & exited over it so much that he approached to CR Sahab & humbly asked about his suggestion on the tune. CR Sahab heartily appreciated it & only addition from his side was the starting of tune. After a decade, Roshan Ji approached Burman Dada & requested to grant him permission to use THAT tune & Burman Dada happily agreed. And The Immortal Songs based on THAT immortal tune are -
Thandi Hawaaayen,
Lehraa Ke Aaayen,
Rutt Hai Jawaan,
Tumko Yahaan,
Kaise Bulaayen.
Rahen-Na-Rahen Hum,
Mehka Karenge,
Ban Ke Kali,
Ban Ke Sabba,
Bagh-e-Vafaa Main.
USR
PS: The starting as suggested by CR Sahab was- 'Aaha Aa Aa, La La La La Laa,Hmmm mmm,Kaise Bulaayen'.

None of the examples above, including mine's, qualify for " Pair of Rafi songs"

Dr. Faustus Ji,
Many sincere thanks for this upload of the studio-recorded version, in addition to your earlier uploaded Live version.
After hearing this studio version, I can say that it is a real match for the Deedar song, not only in tune but also in Rafi Saab's fresh voice and rendition! Also, regrding the timing of both, I surmise that both these (ie. the Deedar song and this studio-recorded Naat) were at about the same time!

Ascorpio,
Whatever may be your actual name, you are simply great! You have infused new life into this thread by discovering and uploading these two identically tuned (not just similar) songs, both on Mukhda and Antaras!
And what great songs both are! Must-uploads for all Rafi fans! Even if they were not identical, they would have been excellent, top-class uploads. And both are, in fact, even identical in tune!
Many congratulations and thanks for providing yet another genuinely identical pair! "Mere Geeton Ka Singhar Ho Tum" is, of course, penned by Madhukar Rajasthani and composed by Khayyam. Any idea about the other identical song?
Venkat
PS. I tend to think that the "Har Bekhash Ke Gham Kar Ho Tum" is an earlier production compared to "Mere Geeton Ka Singhar Ho Tum"! Incidentally, I now know that this "Har Bekhash Ke Gham Kar Ho Tum" is penned by Feroze Jalandhari and composed by once again Khayyam!

After hearing both the above great, identically tuned songs many times, I must say that I liked the less famous "Har Bekhas Ke Gham Kar Ho Tum" song more than more famous "Mere Geeton Ka Singhr Ho Tum"!

Friends,
Can anyone add to the identical pairs already discussed?
Mind you, we are talking only of pairs of two Rafi songs each, that are identically tuned, both in Mukhda and also the Antara. We are not talking of hundreds of the pairs wherein there is some similarity only in the Mukhda or only in the Antara.

Above is the updated list of 9 pairs of Rafi songs that are almost identically tuned both on Mukhda and Antara.
Any more such identical pairs?
Venkat
Great job Venkatji!
I don't know if these two meet the criteria or not but both were straight lifted off Paul Anka's
Diana.
Baap Bete - Bol Bol Bol My Little Dove (MD - Madan Mohan)
Dil Deke Dekho - Kaun Yeh Aaya Mehfil Mein (MD - Usha Khanna)Anu Ji,
I know the second song very well, but I do not have the first one, nor can recall it.
Do you think that the tunes match both on Mukhda (opening) and also on Antara (stanza)?
If so (or even otherwise), please upload both the songs, as I do not have the Dil Deke Dekho number also.

Anu Ji, Aap Bole Aur Galti Ho, Aisa Ho Hi Nahin Sakta.
Both the songs are almost identical both on Mukhda and Antara. Mukhdas are identical and Antaras are almost identical.
Including the "Aa Aa Aa Aa/ La La La La" in the Antara of Baap Bete song and its match, "Oho Oho Oho Ohohoho", in the Antara of Dil Deke Dekkho song!!! One song is on Neeta and the other on Sheela.
Very good find. More so because, unlike the earlier nine, the songs in this pair have different MDs!!!
So, we have the 10th identical pair. Yahoooo.

Anu Ji,
I have now downloaded that Paul Anka's DIANA too and heard it.
Neeta and Sheela have come in place of Diana!!!
Usha Khanna has copied it 'makhi ki makhhi', whereas Madan Mohan Saab has tried to somewhat improvise!!!
Venkat
PS. One naughty question, though.
Did MM and UK copy Diana without each other's knowledge and find that both copied the same song, only after both songs were released?
Or, did either of them (ie. either MM or UK) copy the other's song? After all, both songs are of 1959.

Venkatji, in regard to your question - I really don't know whether Usha Khanna and MM knew that they were copying the same song (Diana) or each other's song.
Madan Mohan was an established MD. To be precise, he had already directed 35-36 movies before Baap Bete. Therefore it's obvious that his copied version was not "makhi ki makhi" (I'm assuming this means word-to-word) whereas Dil Deke Dekho was Usha Khanna's first movie. Not only did she copy this song's tune, most of the songs from DDD were inspired from the other English tunes.

We should also take in account these two songs 'Dekho Taanga Mera Niraala & Tere Nainon Ne Jaadu Daala' from Taangewaali 1955 - even though the MD is the same & from the same movie but IMO both the songs are different (one is a solo n the other a duet) with the same tune.

Thanks for the correction, Anu Ji.
It means that there are three beautiful solos of Rafi Saab in this Naya Qanoon(1965). 1.Kuch Aisi Pyari Shakl Mere Dilruba Ki Hai, 2.Shama Mein Taqat Kahan Jo Ek Parwane Mein Hai and 3.Unhe Kissa-e-Gham Likhne Ko Baithe.

Lyricist - Anjaan
5:09/160kbps
[attachmentid=229327]
Both the songs have only Mukhdas and no Antaras. And the Mukhdas of both songs are identical and hence both songs are identical in tune.
S.Mohinder from Punjab must have heard the co-Punjabi, Hansraj Behl's Punjabi song and must have waited for an opportunity to lift it.
Many thanks for this discovery, Anu Ji.

Venkat-ji,
These two songs sound similar in both Mukhda and Antara:
Tang Aa Chuke Hai (Pyaasa/1957/SDB)
AND
Humko Tumhare Ishq Ne (Ek Musafir Ek Haseena/1962/OPN)
The former has no music, whereas the latter has the tabla and harmonium.
Could OPN have been inspired by SDB, or is this tune from another source ?.

PA Ji,
You are right about this pair. The similarity is, I think, because both are based on the typical Shayari notation tune, popularly used in olden days.
Wish someone could upload both the songs for a thorougher examination!

PA Ji,
Yes, this tune is from other source.
I agree with Venkat Ji.
Yes, both the songs have same tune based on the popular tune used to sang 'Nazm(?)' during 'Mushairaa'.
Qawwaalee is also a outcome of 'Musahiraa'. We can put these in Folk-tune category. Similarly 'Bhangra' is a Folk-tune. All folk-tunes are having their unavoidable respective 'Chaal' hence I don't think it is fair to put these in 'similar tune' songs.
'Tang Aa chuke Hain' was also sang by Asha in Tower House(1958) composed by N.Datta, with some different tune.
'Ye Hawaa Ye Raat Ye Chandini' by Sajjad Hussain
'Tujhe Kya Synaauun Main Dilruba' by Madan Mohan
Both these Ghazals are having same tune.. Madan Mohan had fully agreed that here I have used Sajjad Sahab's tune.

Thanks for all of the infomation USR-ji, appreciate it !
The MM-Sajjad story is interesting. Talat sang the song extremely well, but I felt Rafi went one up on him with his powerful rendition.

frds both songs are based on Punjabi folk tune. So similarity has to be there. and no composer is inspired by other !
one more song based on same tune is RAfi 's - Ude jab jab teri zulfein ! may be the best one on this tune
Its again is by punjabi composer - OPN !~
in lil hurry !

Friends,
Yunus Khan Ji , a senior presenter of Vividhbharati, with a voice like Ameen Sayani's, had done a great job of presenting our Rafi's identically tuned pairs, that we brought to light in this thread!
Tonight's Chayageet was the part-I of the program. In tonight's program, Yunus Khan Ji had covered three identical pairs, Pair No.2, Pair No.4 and Pair No.10, mentioned in the above list!!
The other pairs would be covered in another Chayageet program to be announced.
By the way, Yunus Khan Ji was kind enough to mention and acknowledge my name at the end of tonight's Chayageet. He said,
"Ek Hi Dhun Pe Banye Gaye Yeh Jodiyan Aap Tak Laane Mein Hamare Hyderabad Ke Shrota, Venkat Ji, Ke Saujany Thaa!"!!!!

You are right, Faraaj, that both the songs in these pairs are of the same period!!
But, that said, we are not sure whether the Islamic one is first or the film one is first!!For your information, in all these eleven pairs that this thread has 'discovered' or identified, both the songs are almost identically tuned, not just in parts, but in the complete songs, ie. both in mukhdas and antaras!!!! That is what makes these pairs special!!
Otherwise, you see lots and lots of songs which are similar in parts with some other songs, but NOT IDENTICAL with the other song on mukhda as well as antara!!!

Venkkatji, I just sent you both the audios.
I'm listening to Chalo Baghdad Chalo.... It doesn't sound like Rafi sahab to me but I got it from Rafi sahab's Islamic CD. Whoever is singing this sounds like him. It could be Rafi sahab and the audio is just not clear enuf for one to be certain that it is him. Kindly listen to it and tell me what you think.
This site also mentions Rafi sahab as the singer:

Hi Anupama
Having heard Chalo Baghdad Chalo on YouTube its definitely not Rafi. The singer is trying to imitate Rafi but struggles (as would anyone!) on the higher pitch...
