I beg your pardon for my poor english. I meant the
sound track of the movie. The song you have posted
is complete and you need not ul 78rpm version.

This one is my favourite amongst from all the songs of GM Durrani Saab.
Lataji's voice quality at that time was awsome.

The song is

DO BICHHDE HUYE DIL AAPAS MAIN GAYE MIL
ARMAANON KI NAGRI MAIN HUYA AAJ SAVERA

It is picturised on the young DEV ANAND and KAMINI KAUSHAL
Movie Shair (1949)
Music Gulam Mohammad

Such a sweet song. Thanks Mahesh-ji. I also love Lata's voice around this time period.

I have the song 'Dil Mera Toda' from Majboor (1948). I'm not sure if it is considered rare or not. If you like I can upload it in the Lata forum. It is in CD quality.

Here is another old classic in the voices of Shamshad begum and
Ghulam Haider
.

NAINO KE BAAN KI REET ANOKHI
BAAN CHALEN AUR NAIN NA DEKHEN

The movie is Khajaanchi. It was released in
the year1941 and a huge hit during that time.
The movie is also known for its immensely popular music scored
by Ghulam Haider. This is what Lataji has once spoken about the
songs from the movie Khajaanchi :

When I was in Pune, Master Gulam Haider’s first movie ‘Khajanchi’ was released. The music in this film changed the style of hindi film movies itself. The movie was a very big hit. Here onwards hindi films started having a touch of punjabi music. Till then it was the influence of Marathi music due to ‘Prabhat cinema’ and bengali music due to ‘New Theatres’. After ‘Khajanchi’, composers like Naushad came in and music started to change.

This song is picturised on Ramola and SD Narang.
Lyrics are written by Wali Saheb.

Enjoy

This one for the fans of Suraiyyaji and Khurshid Anwar Saab.

PAPI PAPIHA REY PEE PEE NA BOL BAIRI PEE PEE NA BOL

The song is from the movie PARWANA.

Although this movie was released in the year 1947, in the song Suraiyyaji looks
very young and slim. It appears that the song might have been shot during 1944-45
and the release of the movie got delayed due to some unavoidable circumstances.

Khurshid Anwar Saab is the music director and Dina Nath Madhokhji is the lyricist.

Great Song. Panna Lal Gosh plays the flute here.
I think it was late 1946 when Khurshid Anwar was
called to Bombay from Lahore for Parwana's music.
He was doing music for PagDanDi at that time. Pandit
Amarnath later completed the music of Pagdandi.

In the year 1942, Ghulam Haider gave another huge hit KHANDAN starring PRAN, NOOR JEHAN & MANORMA (Yes the same old lady whom we have seen in many movies of sixties and seventies).

The song that is uploaded here is CHALO PANIYA BHARAN KO

It is picturised on young MANORMA.
It was Pran Saab's first movie as a hero. He is sitting in front row.
How many members can recognise him?

Regarding this song there was some controversy that Noorjehanji has also sung
a few lines in this song. But as the song is picturised on Manorma and others,
the voices are of Shamshad begum, ??????? and chorus.
There is no voice of Noorjehan. Those songs of this movie, which were picturised
on Noorjehanji, are indeed rendered by her only.

I am taking the liberty of suggesting the next one.

In Humayon, Rajkumari sang for Nargis and Shamshad
for Veena. Let us see/ hear ' ae chaand tuu bataa de,

BTW, all female songs of Humayon were recorded in the
voice of Shamshad (issued by HMV) as well as Rajkumari
(issued by Columbia).

Kidar Sharma wrote those immortal songs in the movie DevDas(1935).
Incidently the singer Raaj Kumari played the role of Chandra (chandramukhi)
in that movie. Kidar Sharma was fascinated by her voice and in majority
of his movies, we find, the leading lady singer was Raaj Kumari.

Kidar Sharma also has the distinction of introducing many stars in the
movies. The song which is uploaded now is from his movie Suhaag
Raat(1948)
. This is the debut movie for Geeta Bali as well as for
Snehal Bhatkar, the music director. Kidar Sharma, being Punjabi, has beautifully
used punjabi folk music, basically based on raag pahadi, in his movies including
this song. It is an old traditional folk tune, which was in vogue during that period in the
villages of Punjab.

The song is sung by RAAJKUMARI AND GEETA ROY(DUTT) in their
soft and sweet voices.

It is picturised on GEETA BALI AND BEGUM PARA

The words are:

KIS PAAPI SANG ULJHI ANKHIYAAN
HAI ANKHIYAAN
RO RO NAIN GAWAAYEN

thanks maheshbhai for the rare song from suhag raat[1948].
regarding kidar sharma;there is a biography of his available''the one and lonely kidar sharma''.hmv had also released a 2 cassette set of his rare songs 2-3 years ago.debut film of snehal bhatker was neelkamal[1947];where he gave music under his real name b. vasudev.as he was under some contract from hmv;he started using his daughter's name snehal for later films.
i think all songs in suhag raat were based on raga pahadi;earlier in chitralekha ;kidar sharma had asked music director jhande khan to use raga bhairvi for all songs.
maheshbhai, can you upload geeta-shamshad duet''mere dil ki dhadkan mein kaun aa samaya'' and mukesh's number''lakhi babul more, kahe ko bihaye bides''.
i have been looking for these songs for a very long time.also,i have never seen suhag raat's vcd/dvd in any shop in delhi.where did you get it from?

mahesh

mahesh

thanks so much for all your lovely videos. the last one - from BASANT - brought back so many memories from my childhood days. we had this song on 78rpm record and it was a popular one at home. I still remember very vividly - Pannalal Ghosh (the M.D. of this movie) used to live down the road from where we used to live, in Calcutta - and used to conduct flute classes there. Parul Ghosh, as many may know, was his wife and the sister of Music director Anil Biswas.

another bit of info - related to the 'most beautiful' heroine mentioned in your post. No arguments about the fact that she was the most beautiful.

However, IMDB records the first film of Madhubala (born as Mumtaz Jehan Begum on Valentine's Day 1933), as Baghdad ka chor (1934) where she is credited as 'Mumtaz' and her second film as 'Shaheed-e-muhabbat' (1936) where she was again credited as Mumtaz. Basant (1942) is listed as her 3rd film, where she is credited as 'Baby Mumtaz' (for the first time). Strangely, her 4th film, when she was still 11, was Mumtaz Mahal !! Later, in 1947 when she was 14, she got her first major break via Kidar Sharma in Neel kamal opposite Raj Kapoor - but was still credited as Mumtaz (as per IMDB). Another film in 1947, where she is credited as 'Madhubala', is the film 'Dil ki Rani' - where, again, she acted with Raj Kapoor. I think this was probably her first film using her 'to-become-very-famous' name. In 1949, of course, came the famous role in Mahal. Then, later in 1950, she acted in a film called 'Madhubala' - with Dev Anand !! Interesting ?

By the way, Mahesh ... any chance of getting the video of that song from Basant - picturised on the 'most famous' heroine - who was still a child star at that time ???

Sri

Posted by: maheshks Oct 15 2005, 02:25 PM

Sri Bhai the information displayed at IMDB is not correct.
She was born in the year 1933 at Delhi and their family
shifted to Bombay only in the year 1940-41. The two movies
credited to her by IMDB are of the year 1934-36 i.e. when
she was in the age group of 1-3 years. It was certainly
some other Mumtaz who had played the role of heroine.

"She stole the hearts of the masses even as a little girl. With the song
`Tumko mubarak ho unche mahal ye, humko hain pyari hamari galiyan'
in the hit film Basant, Baby Mumtaz established herself as a star.
Later known as Madhubala, this pig-tailed teenager's initial flirtation
with stardom failed to launch her career as a heroine.

Born in Delhi on February 14, 1933, Mumtaz Jehan Begum (her real name)
made her first appearance in front of a movie camera at the famous
Bombay Talkies Studio, Malad. Director Amiya Chakravarty, who was responsible
for giving many newcomers a break, was also instrumental in Madhubala's
debut performance. Devika Rani also took kindly to this young girl and Baby
Mumtaz's first screen appearance was a jubilee hit".

Sri Bhai,

I will upload the song picturised on Baby Madhubala (Baby Mumtaz) within
a couple of days.

Posted by: sri Oct 15 2005, 08:02 PM

You're right. Mahesh
Surely, Mumtaz could not have become 'Baby' Mumtaz after a few years!! Also, I find now that Mumtaz was listed in the main cast of the 1934 movie - and surely that could not have been a 1 year old baby !! That must have been some other Mumtaz.

So, it is Basant - which must have been her first film. Thanks for pointing out the holes in the IMDB info

Awaiting the video !

Sri

Koshal saab,

The song...baba man ki aankhen khol.....is from this movie only.

Urzung Sir,

Here is a gift for you. Raw but very SWEET AND MELODIUS voice of Suraiya
in the movie Sanjog.

It was one of her earliest movies (released in the year 1942) when
she started playback singing, particularly for Mehtab. I think she must not
have reached the age of even 15 while giving full playback for Mehtab.

Personally,
I like 3 Suraiya's solos better than NJ songs from this film. My most fav song from Anmol Ghadi is "Mein dil mein dard basa la aayie, nainoun sai nain mila aa ie"

It is a well sung song and so is ' ab kaun hai meraa, kahoo ab kaun hai meraa'
as both of these ride on good tunes by Naushad. However Surindra did not have
a 'singer's voice'. Earlier he had sung a song in Deccan Queen: yaad na kar
dil e hazee.n bholee hui kahaaniyaaN, which was very popular and is still
remembered. Some years back I had a chance to meet an oldtimer who had
attended Surindra's marriage here.
Thanks for the video.

In return for this lovely upload of yours, here's a picture of the 45 rpm record, released by Hindustan Records, which we must have bought sometime in the 60s. I have the 78 rpm version too ... but couldn't find it easily

As was usual in those days, the film version of the song is slightly different from the record version

Could anyone kindly PM me these clips of Madhubala's? I have seen a movie where the little Madhubala sings the song "Meri Chhoti Si Duniya Re" on stage... was that song among these clips? And is this movie available in DVD/VCD?
Thanks a lot, Mahesh-ji, for sharing all these clips with us. bow.gif

Sharma Sahib,

It is a god song. It is the first time that I have heard
songs from this movie.
Incidently the 'zamiin' of this ghazal as well as its
tune is somewhat similar to a ghazal sung by Zohra in
Sohni Mahinwal-1946 mded by Lal Mohammad:
nahii.n chiraaG-e-muhabbat jalaa_e jaate hai.n
ye dil ke daaG jahaa.n ho.n dikhaa_e jaate hai.n
vo dard ban ke jigar me.n samaa_e jaate hai.n

Here is a write-up on Noor Mohammed Charlie written by Zulqarnain Shahid (Pakistani film journalist - nephew of Indian singer Talat Mahmood).

"Palat Tera dhyan kidhar hail"... it was a typical honk of the champion comic of the pre-Partition Indian cinema. Noor Mohammad Charlie made a great splash in the sea of the Indian cine kingdom, when he entered the fray with his own zany jokes and word variations, apart from his pet phrases and lingual zigzaggers. It is an undeniable fact that Muslims have dominated the humor department in the Indian film industry over the 73 years history of the talkies, including Yaqoob, Noor Mohammd Charlie, Mirza Musharraf Agha, Johnny Walker, Mehmood, Ghauri, A. Shah Shikarpuri and others. About Noor Mohammad Charlie, you could say that with his own distinct style, he was the most hilarious doctor of the best medicine.

Noor Mohammad belonged to the Memon community, and like many young men of his age, he was a great fan of Charlie Chaplin. He loved to walk and talk with Chaplin's style and even had a tiny moustache like his ideal artiste from Hollywood. Those were the days when the world was overwhelmed by the incredible talent of Charlie Chaplin, Laurel & Hardy, The Three Stooges, Butt Abbott & Costellou, Norman Wisdom and many others. As the World Wars ravaged the world in the first half of the 20th century, the people thronged to the cinema to forget and drown their sorrows in laughter and fun. In India, a similar trend was in the offing, and Charlie just swept away the people with his style of talking and his funny gongs, making noises that were new to the sub continent, and acting in a way that tickled the generations emerging out of the gloom of the British Rule. Elephanta Movies produced Pak Daman Raqqasa, directed by B. R. Oberoi, in 1932, and introduced this most peculiar young character Baba Charlie, with nudges, prods and his individual hairstyle that took the nation by storm.

In those days, the comics believed in the body language, as did Charlie. But, apart from that his gift of the gab stood him in good stead. Lala Yaqoob, Ghauri and Dixit were already famous before Charlie, but he left many of them behind with his innovation and hilarity. Zarina was released in 1932 too, where he had an early run in with Yaqoob, where Jaal Merchant and Zubeida did the lead. Later, films like Chandarhasa, Premi Pagal, Nadra, Farzand e Hind, Toofan Mail, College Girl, Raat Kee Rani, Secretary, Thokar etc were released, which made Charlie a remarkable artiste of the subcontinent. It's generally thought that his best character acting was reserved for the Ranjeet Movietone, which was the film company of famous maker, Chandulal Shah. He even played the lead in some of the humorous movies, including Chand Tara, where he was partnered by Sauran Lata, very famous in those days, Ghazal, where Leela Chitnis was his heroine, and Dulha, with Chandr Prabha.

When he came to Pakistan, Charlie was almost at the end of his popularity and career, and worked in almost a dozen Urdu, Sindhi and Punjabi movies. His first film released in Pakistan was Agha G. A Guys Punjabi film, Mundri, in 1949, which was directed by Daud Chand. It was quite a hit to boost up the local cinema in its formative years. Ragni and Ilyas Kashmiri were the leading artistes of the film. In Nazeer Ajmeri’s Beqarar, he played his light hearted role to the hilt and was applauded all the way. Similarly, in Ataullah Hashmi's Akeli, in 1951, he was a sidekick of Santosh, whose leading lady was Ragni. In 1956, the first ever Sindhi film, Umar Marvi was released in Pakistan, by Fazlani and Sheikh Hasan, where Nighat Sultana and Fazlani did the lead, and Charlie had a characteristic role of this famous folk tale. In J. C. Anand's Miss '56, he acted alongside Meena Shoori, Santosh, Aslam Parvez and Shamim Ara. Fazlani's Sindhi film, Pardesi was released in 1958, which had Charlie enacting a lovely role of a clever villager. Another Sindhi film the same year, Parai Zameen, also starred Charlie. Sharon Kee Dunya, the same year was a flop, and showed that Charlie was definitely .

Charlie worked in Lollywood even after both superstars, Waheed Murad and Munawwar Zareef
had made their debuts in the early 1960s. In 1965, he did the lead in a funny film by Aslam Irani, called Pilpili Sahab, which had the lead role for him opposite Naghma. He did well enough, with a young Munawwar Zareef playing a smaller crony by his side. Fazlani's Urdu film, Ustadon Ke Ustad, which appeared in 1967, also had Charlie probably his last film. His son, Latif Charlie has been
a famous character actor on the silver screen, and has played various roles in
films like Doraha, Pyar Kee Jeet, Raaz etc. Charlie himself shifted to America, and came back to Pakistan just before his death.

Hello Mahesh Bhai,
Thanx for the video version of this song. This song is available on Shamshad Begum - Golden Collection (2 CD set). I didnt know that this song was background number. Do you have other songs from this movie? If yes, can you upload audio or video versions of those songs.

Btw, I dont know who decided to cast Kishore Sahu as hero. biggrin.gif wink.gif

Here is another rare video from Pakistani Film Naukar (1955). This was Swaran Lata's most famous film in Pakistan (Pakistan's second golden jubilee hit after Sassi (1954)). Her most famous film in Pre-Partition India was Rattan (1944) (a video song of which was uploaded by Mahesh Bhai sometime ago), which is still considered as one of the biggest hits of Bollywood and established Naushad's reputation as Music Director.

Music Director was G.A. Chisthi who was guru of music director Khaiyyam, and Khaiyyam mentioned him several times in his interviews. G.A. Chisthi was the most prolific music director of Pakistan in the first 25 years of Pakistani Cinema, composing for more than 100 movies.

By some magazines this film is also regarded as the debut of Playback singer Kauser Perveen, which is not right because she sang earlier for Gumnaam (1954). However, she got her first break through this film by singing the famous lorie "Raj dulare meri akhiyoun kai tarey, tujh pai warie warie jaoun". The film version was sung by Munawwar Sultana, but Kauser's version remains famous till today.

Here is a very nice sad song sung by Kauser Perveen for Swaran Lata.

Song :- Laga di aag kiyoun maalik, meray aashiyanai mein
Maza milta hai kiya tujhko dil kai dukhanai mein

Singer :- Kauser Perveen
M/D :- G.A. Chisthi
Film :- Naukar (1955)
Picturized on :- Swaran Lata.

Specially for me! very well. The way he sings gives rise to
a doubt that he lacked some of his teeth. Just an average
'kaam chalaa_o' singer. But nevertheless I enjoyed it. Music
from 40s is quite thrilling for me.

There was an old Punjabi folk song, much older than any of these, with that tune:

"Bina Rubb de toon hor naal pyar na karin o'manna (heart) yaad rakhin,
Sonna chhad ke toon mitti da bapar na karin o'manna yaad rakhin".

Baat yeh hai ke jab main ek aur purani movie ka vhs dekh raha tha to mujhey ek aisa gana dikha jiski dhun kuchh aisi hai jo ki Naushad Saahib ne Mohd. Rafi Saab ko ek amar bhajan ko gaane ke liye di...mujhe lagta hai ki logon ko asli purana gaana bhi dikha diya jaaye. Naushad saahib ka composition is gaane ke theek 17 years ke baad aaya aur bahut hit ho gaya. Right now I am not disclosing the movie's name, year of release and the music director's name (It is a sort of quiz)...I do not know the names of the actors, on whom this song was picturised, as well as the lyricist and the singer......some one to please identify these people. For clue....this photograph is from the same movie......now it should be quite easier to identify the movie otherwise it is very very difficult......the movie of course is a block buster of its time and still well known.

Sharmaji,

Would you happen to have Geeta's "Ae dil mujhe batade, too kis pe aa gaya hai", "Bhai Bhai"
picturized on Nimmi and Ashok Kumar.

I have the song but not the Video. One of the sexiest and suggestive scenes, without anyone touching
the other!

It is picturized on Shyama and Ashok Kumar, not Nimmi.

Dear Zippoo,

I agree with you 100%. This may be the best song of all time!

In the movie version, one of the ladies picks up the flower pot and uses it to add an "additional" tabla.
The added rhytms are interestingly merged with the original tabla.
The Record is ony 3 minutes long and does not have the adde rhythms.

In this same movie, there is another awsome song by Lata, "Kut-the hain dukh mein ye din", also considered
by some to be her best.

Thanks,
Jay

Ushaji, in the eighties, Shyama had appeared on television in the Tabassum's programme "Phool khilein hain gulshan gulshan". She was really fat at that time. I distinctly remember that she, with her distinctive smile, said that when her children saw her movies they said "Mummy tum pehle aisi thi...ab tumhe kya ho gaya hai".

Sharmaji,

I want to start a new topic and want to sound out your opinion.

The topic will involve posting songs motivated by western tunes.

For example: "Oh Babu oh Lala" was motivted by "Rum and Coca Cola".

One would post both the songs and details about those.

The purpose here is not to acuse anyone of stealing, but to see what Indian talent can do
with one line from a foreign tune.

What do you think?

Jay

Jay Ji,

Nice catch on the impromptu tabla. Normally, our beloved heroes and heroines move their hands on any musical instrument they are supposedly playing in a manner that reminds me of "kahin pe nigaahen (aur haath), kahin pe nishaana". However, the lady playing the sitar in the video seems to be playing the sitar part note for note (at least to my untrained eyes). I have never seen such a perfect "rendition" by anyone on the screen before.

Just an observation.

I doubt if Ashaji sang in Hindi films in 44. Even in Badi Ma she only acted and Lataji playbacked for her. All records say her first song was in 48--the grp number in Chunariya. sad1.gif

Posted by: maheshks Jan 21 2006, 06:57 PM

She started singing in the Marathi movies in the year 1943. "Majhaa Baal" was perheps the movie name. This song is composed by Vasant Desai, a prominent music director of Marathi movies even at that time. rolleyes.gif

Since she did not have much role to play (sing) in this song, I said this might be her earlier recordings and not full song, probably for this reason, it does not find any mention in the record books.

Does anybody know that in 1948, besides "Chunariya" about which the records say she sang that one group number, she sang solos also? What do the records say about this....

Says Khayyam, "Asha and I have worked together right from my first film, Biwi, in 1948. I had asked Asha to sing Mere man ke aangan chand chamka for the then superstar Mumtaz Shanti. She sang it beautifully".

Zippoo ji,

You are a keen observer. In many Indian movies, the hero is playing the violin or Piano, but there is NO
Violin or Piano sound in the track!

K. L. saigal not only sang on the sets, but required that a full orchestra follow him around!

By the way, keep sending these awsome videos. I have all the audio tracks that I want (some captured
from the film), but videos only from HF. So, please send anything that you have.

At times, I have taken parts of a song from the 78 rpm and part from the movie to construct a longer track.

For example, in Shri 420, Lata sings a snippet of "Mera Joota Hai Japani" near the end, and I have added it
to the Mukesh song.

The records do mention the film Biwi and the song only as 1950--maybe the film took 2 yrs to be produced? Even before that in 49 Asha sang for Khayyam in the film Parda. The records say her first solo was in 1948--2 songs for the film Bhakt Gopal Bhaiyya. Unfortunately these do not seem to be available. sad1.gif

Lady playing sitar - Jayshree Gadkar (Shantaram's second wife and Rajeshree's Mom)
Chappie singing - V Shantaram
The "pot" lady - no clue, anyone??

Questions (inspired by idle curiosity):

1 Did Shantaram ever divorce any of his wives? Who was his first wife? I know Sandhya (ughh) was his 3rd wife.
2 Was Jayshree Gadkar a trained musician?

Ashish I donot recollect any other movie where she had played a significant role. One thing I know about Peace Kamal or Kanwal is that she was crowned as Miss India in 1953.

I may be wrong but I think Peace Kanval came into the film world
by winning a Kolynos-Kardar contest. She also appeared in
Kardar's Barati.

Urzung Saab,

What could I gather about some of the girls (those who were crowned as Miss India in the initial years) is that

"Initiated in 1947, the year India got its Independence, the first Miss India title was conferred upon actress Pramila based on all-India voting by fans, editors and prominent journalists from different magazines. Pramila was described as "all India's shapeliest heroine" by the Indian Film Journalists' Association, Mysore city, and she was presented the title by Morarji Desai. Nutan, a celebrated beauty of Indian cinema who had a meteoric rise as an actress, was crowned Miss India in 1952. Peace Kanwal, pageant winner in 1953, once a shy and self-conscious person, today holds solo painting exhibitions in art galleries at the Waldorf Astoria in New York and the Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai".

Regarding Khandaan song....it is the file no.5 on cd 1

Inaam...Meri Ammi ka raaj bhala...is not available.

The next song is a beautiful composition of Shyam Sunder

Talking about Meena Shorey (Lara Lappa girl)... who migrated to Pakistan in 1956. Here is a very rare, sweet and peppy song picturized on her from the Pakistani Film Aakhri Nishan (1958). It was one of her few hit movies in Pakistan.

Music is by Rehman Verma (it was his second film in Pakistan after Baaghi (1956)). He composed one Indian film in 1948 Heer Ranjha with Khaiyyam as Verma Ji.

Other known faces seen in this song are Neelo (famous dancer who later became heroine), Sudhir (hero), and Nazar (comedian).
[If you look at the song picturization, there is one MAJOR FLAW in the direction of this song... (Hint :- Look carefully as the song ends). Can someone point it out? wink2.gif

I dont know who the singer is, but guessing by the voice it appears to be Nahid Niazi. Maybe Urzung Khan can confirm it?

Rut hai suhani Gorie Kie Jawani
Dag mag dag mag doley

Movie :- Aakhri Nishan (1958)

Sharmaji,

I am sorry to hear the fate of Meena Shorey.

Many years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting her and getting an autograph; in India (before 1956).

Next time, I visit India, I will try to locate it and share it.

Her autograph was very peculiar (funny). She wrote it with two o's, Meena shoorey.

The o's had semi-circles inside that made them look like human eyes looking at you in a very humorous way.

It was a joke inside of the signature. I can still feel her looking at me.

Do you, by any chance, have a video Lara Lappa? I have the movie audio.

Hello Jaykoshal,
Here is an article on Meena Shoorey from my website.

Meena Shorey was the silver screen temptress of the 40's and the 50's. She made her debut in Sikander (1942), the memorable Sohrab Modi production starring Prithvi Raj as the world conqueror. Meena starred as the sister of Ambhi, the rajah of Taxila. After her marriage with Roop K. Shorey of the Shorey Studios, Lahore, she migrated to Bombay when the partition riots made it difficult for them to stay in Lahore (The Shorey Studios was soon burnt down by a gang of self-righteous reformers).

Eik Thi Ladki, made by her husband in 1949 in Bombay, dubbed her as the sensational Lara Lappa Girl (after one of the popular songs from that film). Just when the glamour of this achievement was beginning to decline the couple was called to Lahore by J.C. Anand. He had used an Indian soundtrack (Hemant Kumar's number Na Yeh chand ho ga) in his successful movie Sassi last year and now he wanted to improve the status of his plagiarism by imitating the concept of an entire film: Guru Datt-Madhubala hit Mr. & Mrs. 55. What came out was Miss 56.

Although the film did average to good business, it proved to be the swan song of the Shoreys. Meena, the Lara Lappa Girl of the forties was pampered by all, in contrast with the treatment meted out to declining artistes by film-goers in Bombay. For her it was like rediscovering her youth. So when the time came to return to India, she decided to stay back, leaving heart-broken Roop to take yet another trip from Lahore empty-handed, within a span of ten years, first losing his means of livelihood and then his sweetheart. That was the separation of the Shoreys. As time was to reveal, it did no good to any of them. Apart from a few side roles in major films like Sarfarosh (1956), Bedari (1957), and Mauseeqar (1962) she was soon reduced to obscure films with titles that sounded like Jagga (1958), Bacha Jhamoura (1959), Behrupiya (1960)and Jamalo (1962) before her ultimate descent into negative old-age role of a `Madam' running a network of bonded prostitution in Khamosh Raho (1964).

The final part of her life story is almost too painful to be real. While Roop K. Shorey died in 1973 in India, from a broken heart over the separation from his sweetheart, the former wife of the studio owner and once a bright star in the galaxy of Bollywood was reduced to extremely destitute living by the end of her life before her death in 1989. She was last seen in the television program Silver Jubilee in 1983 and then mentioned in one news item as having had stood up in a function begging for charity money to marry off her sister's daughters. Muhammad Ali, who had played a younger (and his first great) role against her in Khamosh Raho was reported to have given her moral support on that occasion. It is said that her burial was arranged with charity money.

Even more perfect rendition of Sitar was by Dilip Kumar in Kohinoor ("Madhuban Mein Radhika" & "Dhal Chuki Sham-e-Gham"). He had actually learnt to play Sitar for that movie. Also Rajendra Kumar learnt to play Shehnai from Ustad Bismillah Khan for the movie Goonj Uthi Shehnai.

A quick browsing through this thread revealed uploads and information about actress Meena Shorey. Here is another interesting autobiographical sketch of her-

For today's generation, the name Meena Shorey may mean nothing,
but music lovers would definitely remember the ever-popular
song "Lara Lappa" from the film "Ek Thi Ladki". The film,
which starred Meena Shorey opposite the debonair Motilal, was
a huge success.
Some years back, a vernacular magazine had published an inter-
view with the (late) actress where she had talked about her
life and film career. An English rendition of this autobio-
graphical sketch is given below :
--------------------------------------------------------------

My real name is Khursheed Jahan. I had two sisters and a brother.
Wazir Begum was my elder sister. Rukhsana and Siddique were
younger to me. Our father Mian Barkat Ali was an agriculturist
from Multan. But due to his irresponsible ways, all lands had
to be sold off one by one, and ultimately we shifted to Lahore.
Here, he started a dyeing business, but this too failed. Money
problems led to domestic squabbles and things became very very
difficult. My elder sister then got married to one Aslam, who
was from Bombay and had some connections with the film industry.
After some time, she called our mother and the other siblings
to come over and live with her in Bombay. Rather than feel
sad, my father was in fact happy at getting rid of his "liabi-
lities". Soon afterwards, he remarried.

Times were hard. Bombay was a much costlier city. I wanted to
join the film industry. Once I accompanied my brother-in-law
Aslam to attend the muhurat of a film. It was Sohrab Modi's
"Sikandar". One of my friends had loaned me a beautiful dress
to wear. Though I was only about 12 years at the time, I looked
a little older and was the cynosure of all eyes at the studio
set which was very crowded. Some people even thought that I was
the heroine of the film. Actually, Vanmala had been cast in this
film opposite Prithviraj Kapoor. Sohrab Modi was busy in arranging
the lights etc. but, seeing the commotion, he came to where we
stood, looked me over, and straightway told Aslam that he wanted
to cast me in his next film. He said that he was in fact on the
look-out for a beautiful girl like me, who could pose a worth-
while challenge to Naseem Banu, who was renowned for her beauty.
I was of course overjoyed and succeeded in persuading my mother
to let me join films and thus my career began.

Sohrab Modi got me to sign an agreement where, he told me, there
was a stupulation that I couln't accept any outside film for one
year. This film (made by Sohrab Modi) was a great hit and my
career was really launched. It was the beginning of a very
happy and prosperous period. We moved into a new house. There
were lots of offers which I couldn't accept. The well-known
Director-Producer Mehboob Khan wasnted to cast me in his film
"Humayun" and even spoke to Sohrab Modi but the latter refused
to release me from his contract. In his next film "Prithvi
Vallabh", I was cast opposit a very handsome actor Al-Nasir.
We fell in love and got married. The film too proved very
successful. Life couldn't have been better.

Around this time, a film-maker Roop K. Shorey came to Bombay
from Lahore. He wanted to cast me in his new film "Shalimar"
but my contract with Sohrab Modi again came in the way.
Instead, Begum Para did the film, opposite Chandramohan. In
those days, Bombay film-stars often visited Lahore, which was
another big film centre. On one such visit, I met Dalsukh
Pancholi. He announced two films "Shehr se Door" and "Arsi"
where I was to star as the leading lady. But, after the
shooting had begun, Sohrab Modi sent a legal notice to me and
Pancholi, claiming damages of Rs. 3 lakhs. I was surprised, as
the one-year period was long over. It turned out that Modi
had taken advantage of my being illiterate and fraudulently
altered the restrictive provision from one to three years.
I came back to Bombay and pleaded with Modi not to destroy my
film career but he refused to budge. For about an year, I had
to remain idle. Then, Modi demanded Rs. 60,000/- from me as
his price for releasing me from the contract. I met his wife,
Mehtab, and requested her to intercede on my behalf. Ultimately,
the matter was resolved on payment of Rs. 30,000/-. I then
returned to Lahore.

My husband Al-Nasir remained behind in Bombay and continued to
work in films. He was a philanderer and had relations with many
women, betraying my faith and love. First, he befriended
Kuldip Kaur, who say through his game. After some time, he
married Manorama but left her soon. Then he married Veena.
Faced with this situation, I obtained a divorce from him.

In Lahore, I began shooting for Pancholi's "PatJhar" with a new
leading man. Geeta Bali too was cast in the movie. It was
only half-completed when the country was partitioned and
Pakistan came into being. Since I had several films lined up
in Bombay, I decided to go back there, along with my family.
I acted in films like "Actress". "Kale Badal" and "Dukhiari".
In those days, I lived in a flat near Shivaji Park. Majnu,
a comedian and character-actor, also lived nearby. He told
me that, following Partition, Director Roop Shorey had come
to Bombay and was living in a hotel. Financially, he was so
hard up that he had no money to even pay his hotel bills. I
felt very sad. I had seen him in his heyday. He was a very
generous man and had helped me in my early career. I had also
acted in his film "Rut Rangeeli". On hearing of his plight,
I went to see him, paid off all his bills and brought him to
live in my flat. I suggested to him that he could resume
film-making and promised to finance his ventures. Shorey's
next film, made with my finance, was "Chaman" and it was quite
successful. Om Prakash had acted in this movie. Then,
Shorey made "Ek Thi Ladki", where the biggest hero of the day,
Motilal, acted opposite me. The film was hugely successful and
its song "Lara Lappa" became a phenomenal hit. Right from the
days of our earlier association, I had felt a sort of gratitude
towards Shorey. In Bombay, we became very good friends. Once,
we went to Calcutta, where he proposed to me. Though he was
already married, I was told that the (bigamy) laws were not
applicable in Bengal. Accordingly, we decided to get married
in Calcutta. He was in fact prepared to become a Muslim. But,
in order to repay him for all his past favours, I decided to
marry him according to Hindu rites. Thus I became Meena Shorey.

In 1954, the Pakistani film industry started a fierce agitation
against Indian films, although Indian films and film-stars
remained very popular with the Pakistani people. Two years
later, I decided to come over to Pakistan and straightway began
receiving film offers. My first film here was "Miss 1956",
which was made in Karachi. On its release, I came to be known
as the topmost heroine in Pakistan. Then a well-known film-maker
Anwar Kamal Pasha signed me on for his film "Sarfarosh", where
I had to play a Princess. A great many costly costumes were got
prepared for the role. Just then, I came to Bombay for a few
days to meet my husband (Sorey). In my absence, another Pakis-
tani actress Sabeeha Khanam plotted against me and got my part
changed to that of a bandit queen. Feeling outraged, I declined
the film. But then I relented, when the producer's father
Hakim Shuja Pasha came to my house and pleaded with me to save
him and his son from financial ruin.

Time continued to elapse. I met actor Asad Bukhari when he was
cast opposite me in "Jamalo". We fell in love and got married
during the making of this film. But he proved to be a most
selfish person. For his sake, I made another film which bombed
at the box office. Although he didn't spend a single paisa on
this film, he started distancing himself from me. Once when
we met in a studio, he even went to th extent of denying our
marriage. All this broke my heart and I decided to leave the
film industry for good.

Pulkit thanks for this rare article enlightening us on the life of Meena Shorey.

I have both the movies Sikandar as well as Prithvi Vallabh on VHS..will try to find how did she look like in these movies (both were released much earlier to ek thi ladki) and who was that al nasir (unknown name for me).

Meawhile, here is a classic from Talat Mehmood

Mahesh you are most welcome. Don't remember her in Sikander but a beautiful girl from Prithvi Vallabh comes to mind. I guess the song- 'raam naam dhan paayaa maine' was picturized on her. Al Naseer seems to be the chap who had to pretend as a poet/singer in the film though he was playing the prince. However, apart from aesthetical joys what captivated me the most in the film was great performance by Durga Khote as princess Mrinal.

Posted by: Ummer Feb 7 2006, 12:08 AM

Al-Nasir also appeared in Guru Dutt-Madhubala starrer "Mr and Mrs 55". He is the guy at the beginning of the film with whom Madhubala flirts.

One more correction. Meena never left film industry, she appeared as late as 1979 in bit roles in Pakistani films.

Ummer.

Million thanks for the Shehnai (1947) Video.
The most popular song of Amir Bai Karnataki and also one of the best ones from Shehnai.
Heard this extended version, an extra stanza for the first time, IMO this film version was never published on records as it exceeds the 3 minutes limit for 78 rpms (since its track time is 4-18 minutes).
Last stanza-----
Kyoon in ankhone ne unka ab tak intezar kiya
Kyoon is bhole dil ne un par baar baar itebaar kiya
Jo yahi mohabbat ka badla mujhko milne wala thaa hayee..
Kyun duniya ke taane sehke maine unse pyaar kiyaa
Sunke hasega zamana dukh apna kisiko sunana naa..

Mari katari...

In the year 1947 Mar Katari Mar Jana of Amirbai Karnataki was released.
Strangely another song on the similar lines was released at or around same time.
Watch and listen to this song :

actor and singer : shyam sunder

movie : dil ki rani (1947)

music : s d barman

Mahesh Bhai

Your video uploads are mind boggling.

The latest one from Dil Ki Rani is truly phenomenal.

Do you also hav Raj Kapoor's "O Duniya Ke Rehne Waalo" from the same movie which he himself sings. If so, please upload.

Thanks and regards

Pradeep

What a beautiful song. I had never heard it. Lata's voice is probably at the best
period of her life. The pitch of this song, the miThaas is exceptional.
And the other thing that I really liked was how well Shashikala tracks with Lata's
voice and her hands on the maTka. She keeps perfect time with the song with
her hands (more than can be said for the gazillion actors who waved their hands
over piano keys on screen). And her expressions seem to match up with the
changing pitch in Lata's voice.
Thank you for sharing this song maheshks. Dil khush ho gaya.

Mahesh Bhai,
Thanx alot for Surang song smile.gif

Here is a nice discussion about Surang soundtrack by Hrishi Dixit.

Song: chhalke na gham ke pyaale, piye jaa piye jaa
in aansuon ko piye jaa... piye jaa

Film: Surang (1953)
Singer: Lata Mangeshkar
Music: Shivram Krishna
Lyrics: Sheven Rizvi

This is a brisk, uplifting melody, etched in the same pattern of positive
effervescence as "aansuon ki chhaaon men bhi hans le...", and delivers a similar
message too. Beautiful vocal artistry in this song - the tune meanders in some
delicate sinusoids with lovely murkis around the curves. Gorgeous rendition from
Lata. There is a subtle, charming pause in the second line, between the "piye
jaa"s, which infuses a sort of urging tone, like "c'mon, piye jaa..."

The song starts off in a slow prelude set against a strumming sitar backdrop:
palkon hi had se baahar aansoo nikal na aaye
keh de musafiron se manzil pe thehar jaayen

I think SURANG is a V Shantaram film... don't recall who's in it (Sandhya), but
it does have a lovely set of songs. Two other Lata solos worth mentioning in
this movie are "gehri gehri nadiya men bahi chali jaaun re" and "guzri thi raat
aadhi...". A couple of songs by Manna Dey and a delightful Asha solo "mast
bahaar hai, pyaar hi pyaar hai" make up the soundtrack muster roll. The overall
music is very similar to another soundtrack from the same year - TEEN BATTI
CHAAR RAASTA, also a Shantaram film, and also composed by Shivram Krishna.

He is absolutely right. It is a Shantaram film, but interestingly does not star
Shantaram himself or anybody married to/related to him smile1.gif

The heroines are Shashikala and Sheela Ramani with Ulhaas and Vinod Kumar.
I recall Ulhas's name but not his face. And I don't know who Vinod Kumar is.
So, mahesh or anybody else, do you have the other songs from this film?
THe description by Hrishi makes them seem worth having.

Deadly work, BC!
I have the movie, and so haven't downloaded these videos... But for folks who haven't seen the movie, do share the song Sa Sa Sa Se Re... Taar Dilon Ke Jod Do as well... That song's so funny to watch! biggrin.gif

Ulhas is a very familar face. Acted as a character artiste in countless movies in 50s and 60s, after playing lead roles in 40s in several movies. He was one of the dacoits in Shantaram's classic, Do Ankhen Barah Haath. In this very thread, Mahesh Bhai had uploaded two video songs of Madhubala's first movie Basant, in which she plays the daughter of lead actors, Mumtaz Shanti and Ulhas. if you have downloaded, you can watch him on the screen in all the three scenes uploaded here, the third one being where he she rides delightfully on his back.

Yeah Thanx God! Mahesh (not Maheshks) conducted a poll on SKS yahoo on the most irritating heroines of Hindi Cinema and Sandhya (Shantaram's wife) won it by overwhelming majority followed by Priya Rajvansh. Jayshree too is equally irritating onscreen, evident by the song picturisations of Parchaaian especially "Apni Kaho kuch meri suno".

Ummer.

Posted by: Pulkit Mar 23 2006, 09:14 PM

Quite true that both Jayshree and Sandhya had an exaggerated flavor to their acting, but wonder if that makes them so irritating. Especially as far as Sandhya is concerned her dance compensated for the flawed acting. I did like her in 'Do Ankhen Barah Haath' and 'Pinjra'. Her dances in Navrang, Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje were classics.

There were all sort of talks as to why Dev Anand was cast as hero instead
of Dilip Kumar. DA in fact suited much better than DK in this movie. When
it was released here, the distributors offered a prize for correct answer as
to Who is/was the Ziddi ?? I do not recall, however, what was the correct
answer.
