Rajesh Khanna, The Super Star

Rajesh Khanna was dubbed as the first Super Star of the Hindi screen. In a reign of five years, from 1969 to 1973, he made a hit after hit that was unprecedented in the Hindi cinema history. He was working on stage when he won the talent contest by the United Producers of Bombay. These were the 10 producers who formed a team to select new talent as an answer to escalating salaries for the established stars.

Rajesh's first movie was Chetan Anand's "Aakhri Khat" released in 1966. Inspite of a great director and some beautiful music, the film was a commercial failure. But things changed when in 1969, Shakti Samanta's "Aradhana" was released. The movie with its beautiful music and strong performance by Sharmila Tagore created history. In Rajesh Khanna, a star was born. And for the next few years, he couldn't do anything wrong.

Rajesh made nearly 130 movies in his professional career. One of our Forum members, Debjyoti, gave me this idea to start a thread on the songs of his albums. By happy coincidence I have CDs of almost all of his movie albums. In the coming months, I will start sharing these albums in chronological order.

Here is part one of Rajesh Khanna's filmography ...

Rajesh Khanna, Filmography Continued ...

In his professional career, Rajesh was nominated for best actor award 11 times. He won the award three times. He won BFJA award for best actor four times, three of them being Hrishikesh Mukherjee movies (Anand, Bawarchi, and Namak Haraam).

Here is part two of the Rajesh Khanna filmography ...

Rajesh Khanna, Filmography Continued ...

One of the lasting contribution of Rajesh Khann's movies is the legacy of beautiful songs. He was a close friend of R.D. Burman and Kishore Kumar. Kishore da gained popularity with the rise in popularity of Rajesh for whom he sang several songs. Burman composed music for nearly 30 movies of Rajesh Khanna.

Here is the third and the last part of Rajesh's filmography ...

Aakhri Khat (1966)

Rajesh Khanna made his debut with this movie. The movie was produced and directed by Chetan Anand. There are are five songs in this movie with Khayyam as usual brilliant in composing these songs. Especially the song by Lataji, "Baharo Mera Jeevan Bhi Sanwaro" is one of her alltime tops. My favorite from the album is Bhupinder's beautiful song "Rut Jawaan Jawaan Raat Meharbaan". Lyrics were written by the incomparable Kaifi Azmi.

Now for the details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Starting with AAKHRI KHAT is a bit surrealistic.

Aurat (1967)

This was Rajesh Khanna's second movie. But it was Padmini's movie all the way. Rajesh played her brother and had a limited role. The movie was made by Gemini and directed by Kishore Sahu. Padmini, a beautiful woman and a talented dancer, had to play a role that demanded some histroinics. The movie sadly shows that she was not much of an actress. The story itself was so antiquated that it is hard to swallow. The only redeeming feature of this movie was its beautiful music by Ravi. Almost all songs are good to hear. Lata's solos and Asha's solo are very appealing. But my favorite is the duet "Yeh Kaun Hai" by Asha and Mahendra Kapoor.

The source of these songs is a DVD. The quality of the DVD was very poor. The songs also reflect the same quality. I tried to clean them as much as I could. There is also a skip in Rafi's solo song. Now for the details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Baharon Ke Sapne (1967)

Nasir Hussain made himself a name as an out and out entertainer. However, in 1967, while assigning directorial duties of making "Teesri Manzil" to Vijay Anand, he made this socially conscious movie. In a later press article he told its reporter that he wanted to make this movie for a long time and finally had an opportunity to do it. Even though it has superb songs, the movie was not a commercial success. Nasir Hussain went back to his old and proven successful formula of making entertainers.

Here are the details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Raaz (1967)

Rajesh started his acting stint working for several famous producers. This movie was produced by Sippy (later of "Sholay" fame). Like Rajesh himself, its heroine Babita (later to become wife of Randhir Kapoor) was a relative newcomer. The movie was based on mystery and had some beautiful songs by Kalyanji & Anandji. The dual version of "Akele Hain" is one to savor. The duet of Lata and Mukesh is another popular number.

Here is a description of these songs and the songs themselves ...

Aradhana (1969)

"Aradhana" established several firsts in the Hindi film industry. Shakti Samanta was known to make entertainers and not emotional dramas. Here he goes against the trend to make a great break away movie. The movie itself was based on the 1946 Hollywood classic “To Each His Own”. Samanta won the Filmfare best picture award for the movie. Five years later, in 1974, the movie was made into Tamil ("Sivahamiyiri Selvan") and Telugu ("Kannavari Kalalu").

Samanta originally offered the role to that fine Bengali actress Aparna Sen. For reasons unknow, she refused the role. Samanta who earlier introduced Sharmila Tagore in “Kashmir Ki Kali” offered her the role where she has to play a mother most of the movie. The serious side of Sharmila was only seen in Satyajit Ray’s films but never before in a Hindi movie. She played the role Olivia de Havilland won an Oscar in the English version. Interestingly, Sharmila also won the Filmfare award for best actress for her touching portrayal in this movie.

Rajesh Khanna starred in five movies before “Aradhana”. All of them were failures. In 1968, he didn’t have a single movie. But this all changed in late 1969. “Aradhana” was released nationwide in October 1969. By overnight it became a huge hit and Rajesh Khanna became a phenomenon. A super star was suddenly discovered by the film going public. The Khanna phenomenon lasted nearly five years until romance was replaced by angry young man’s problems.

This movie also catapulted Kishore Kumar to a playback singing force. In an article in “Screen”, the writer explains that the two duets of Rafi Saab were first picturized and Burman da was all set to go for other songs with Rafi. But Burman da seriously fell ill and went into coma. R.D. Burman who was assisting his father, took over the reins. He also made the decision to use Kishore’s voice for Rajesh. Both of his solos and the duet with Lata that he recorded became huge hits. The song “Roop Tera Mastaana” became a national craze. It also fetched Kishore da a Filmfare award as the best male playback singer.

Because of the date conflicts of Sharmila and Rajesh, for the song "Mere Sapnon Ki Rani", Samanta shot only Rajesh's portions in Darjeeling. Sharmila's portions were done in a studio. Incidentally, in the recent movie "Parineeta (2005)" where Sharmila's real life son, Saif Ali Khan, plays a major role, apparently rides the same train his mother should have used.

All these songs came from a CD. I am also including a version song by Amit Kumar, “Mere Sapnon Ki Rani” from his private album. Now here are the details of all the songs and the songs themselves …

Aradhana was the film that made Rajesh Khanna a superstar and made Kishore Kumar the undisputed KING of playback singing.Rajesh Khanna was replaced by Big B in 1974 but Kishore Kumar craze is intact even today.

Do Raaste (1969)

In the wake of "Aradhana", Rajesh hit another bulls eye with this movie. "Do Raaste" was released almost simultaneously with "Aradhana". Inspite of a very tried family subject, it went onto celebrate a golden jubilee. The music played a big part and people just discovered Rajesh Khanna. Adding this to was the beauty of Mumtaz. It all helped.

There are so many beautiful songs in this movie. Of course "Bindiya Chamkegi" was a chart buster. But Kishore also has a great song in "Mere Naseeb Mein". But my favorite from this album happens to be the beautifully sung "Yeh Reshmi Zulfen". The way Rafi Saab sings this song it is very very heart warming.

Doli (1969)

This was made from a hit Telugu movie "Tene Manasulu". The movie in Telugu was kind of trailblazing. Every actor in it was a newcomer. Producers spared no expense and made the movie even in color. It was a huge gamble. Fortunately it paid off handsomely as it became very successful. They decided to make it in Hindi and when they signed both Babita and Rajesh Khanna, they were relative newcomers. Hindi version was also directed by the director of the Telugu movie, Adurti Subba Rao. The movie in Hindi only enjoyed modest success. But it has some very beautiful songs tuned by Ravi.

Here are the details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Ittefaq (1969)

This movie starred Nanda and Rajesh Khanna. It has no songs. B.R. Chopra poduced it and Yash Chopra directed it. Elder Chopra was making "Aadmi Aur Insaan" at the time. Its heroine, Saira Banu, broke her leg bringing all shooting for that movie to a stand still. B.R. decided to make use of this unexpected liesure time to make a quickie. He entrusted his younger brother Yash to do it.

"Ittefaq" was made in four weeks and went onto to become a huge success. It was based on the English movie "Signpost to Murder" made in 1964 that starred Joanne Woodward and Stuart Whitman.

Incidentally, B.R. also made the first songless movie earlier, "Kanoon (1960)", that was a fine piece of example in what acting is all about as evidenced by the portrayal of Ashok Kumar in that movie. Ittefaq se Nanda starred in that movie as well.

What a brilliant thread !

With pictures.. introduction.. tabulated song details.. a classic in the making..

And I could not help but jump in the bandwagon. as usually I missed two movies, but that I'll fill up later..no problemo..

Thanks Swarapriya..

And what a thread topic.. songs of Rajesh khanna..

I grew up a decade later than those Rajesh golden days.. and those were pre-VHS days.. so, no way to watch a movie even if everyone talked about it.. and probably because of that I connected more to contemporary Amitabh.. than fading Rajesh..

Yet there is no way to remain indifferent to Rajesh and his romance..
There is something in those lines.. that he said in different movies.. often included before his songs.. 'Chalo Pushpa.. aaj kahin bahar chalte hai.. dhoondte kahin aisi jagah..'
or maybe ..'Sir, main marne se pehle marna nehi chahta hoon..'
Something in those lines.. that faintly rings a bell deep inside the heart.. words mold into passion.. and passion takes form in music.. and the song starts.. superb harmony.. and incredible Rajesh..

Rajesh songs are often very special. And it floods you from unexpected corner.

Some time in mid-nineties, I was tracing the footprint of Jim Corbett.. traveling in different places and jungles of Kumaoon.. and incidentally one afternoon reached Naini-tal. There is a nice lake and I was standing by its side.. when I remembered the song.. 'Jis gali mein tera ghar'.. for it was shot probably on that lake.. and I started humming it.. casually.

I had never been a true Mukesh-lover also.. same time-frame factor.. more into Kishore and RD.. yet at that moment, standing next to the lake when the day was rolling into a chilly evening, I felt an irresistible impulse.. I have to listen to that song.. somehow..

I had a walkman, but didn't have the kati-patang cassette among the few I had with me.. that was left lying at Calcutta. What to do.

Luckily there was an audio-shop nearby. I strode into that.. it was almost empty. I asked the guy if he had that cassette.. and told him about my feelings.. if he would rent it for a while.
He looked at me quizzically and picked up the cassette and handed it over to me. I was going to pay when he waved and said.. return when you have your fill. Don't have to pay anything.

I thanked him and came back to lakeside. With the headphone on.. the song filled the universe drowning the world around into oblivion. Daylight melted into darkness while I repeated the song a few times.. sitting next to the gently lapping waves.

Later, I returned the cassette with a pack of cigarette and thanked him from my heart..

And thank you again.. Swarapriya.

Safar as a film did not do quite well but the songs were great, the 2 great sad songs of Kishoreda from Safar indeed created history and can be heard frequently even today.Excellent composition by Kalyanji Anandji.Kishore Kumar used to tell before recording Kalyanji Bhai humko dekar kuch aisa geet gayaiye ya ki humko bhagne na pare. And the duo came up with zindagi ka safar,an immortal number.

I read somewhere that Kishore Kumar once told that 'zindegi ka safar' is one of his personal favorites.
It might well be.. for underneath the 'joking' skin of KK he had a very passionate soul.. that is reflected in many of his songs, including this great one.
Thanks for Safar, Swarapriya.

Swarapriya.

Amit ji ,

Very interesting incident. I guess it reflects impulsivness of a true music lover.

The question is did you become a 'Mukesh' fan after that ??

I am a hugh Mukesh fan. Of coure love song of other legends too.

Sorry to say.. never had the proper chance to deeply cultivate that great genius.. may be with advancing age that door will also open.. as for last few years I'm re-inventing SDB as I never did before.
Thanks for sharing the gossip mood.

In few songs.. rather very few songs.. the dialogue before the song creates an atmosphere.. where the song almost blends in.. creating a total effect..
Such was the case in movie 'Safar', and the dialogue between Rajesh and Ashoke Kumar before the song 'Zindagi ka safar'..

I present here that small clip. Probably the safar LP had the dialogue included. I have no clue. But I have a 20 year old cassette recording (no cable.. the cass-players kept side by side with a newspaper cover to exclude outside noise :-)

Still I present this clip as the dialogue-song blending is superb in this case. The only other such event with Rajesh I remember is from movie 'Amar prem'.. (that recording I have in pretty good condition.. will upload when Swarapriya eventually reach 'Amar prem' ).

Amit, I just saw the movie ("Safar") again. Rajesh definitely had a way with his dialogue delivery. I also remember the scene from "Amar Prem" just before the famous Kishore's song "Chingaari Koi Bhadke".

The Train (1970)

After the huge success of "Ittefaq" it was only a question of time that Nanda was teamed with Rajesh again. "The Train" made money because Rajesh was still a "hot" property. But it was the songs that were a standout. I will upload all the songs in two separate postings, one after another. Here is a description of the first five songs ...

Amar Prem (1971)

This is another one of my favorite R.D. album. At this juncture in his life, RD was at his peak creativity. He churned out one after another masterpieces. With Kishore as his choice singer, the combination of Kishore-Rajesh-RD created some of the best songs of that period.

In this album, papa SD sings for his son RD. Kishore has three beautiful solos. One of my alltime favorites is the song "Chingari Koi Bhadke". There is so much soul, so much pathos, so much agony and pain as penned by the late great Anand Bakshi, and sung with such a passion by Kishore.

Now for details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Anand (1971)

Here is another heart warming winner from the late great Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Hrishida made so many touching movies in his career that they tend to stay with you forever. Apparently Raj Kapoor was to play the role that eventually Rajesh Khanna played. Raj Kapoor was very ill and Hrishida couldn't wait. In a way this was good. I think Rajesh did a super job in this movie. This also was a trail blazer for hitherto unknown actor named Amitabh Bachchan. Together Rajesh and Amitabh showcase their talents magnificently.

There are only a few songs in this movie. I am uploading all of them here. I am also uploading a couple of extended version songs. These are by the courtesy of the Forum members.

The song "Kahin Door" also appears in "Lata's Shraddhanjali-1" but is identical to the one I am uploading. Also, the ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh, has his version recorded in two of his albums, "Close To My Heart" and "In Sync". I am uploading one of these.

Andaz (1971)

Here is another beautiful musical composed by Shankar & Jaikishan. The song "Zindagi Ek Safar Hai" took Indian filmgoers literally by storm. It is still considered to be one of the jewels in the crown of Kishroe da. The movie also signified, in a way, "the changing of guard". Here the baton was passed from Shammi to Rajesh. In a brief appearance Rajesh was endearingly dominating comapred to Shammi. It was for this reason that fans remember Rajesh and not Shammi when they see this movie.

I am including various versions of the song "Zindagi". Some of these may have been contributed by the Forum mebers. Now for a description of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Sangeet ji, thanks for sharing this great picture.

biography of rajesh khanna

Name: Jatin Khanna
Address: Ashirwad, 2 Carter Road, Bandra (W), Mumbai 400 050
Date of Birth: 29 December
Zodiac: Capricorn
Height: 5'10" or 1.79 m
Family: Wife- Dimple Kapadia, Daughter- Twinkle Khanna, Rinkie Khanna
Marital status: separated
Ex-spouse: Dimple Kapadia
Ex-souse: Anju Mahendru
Debut Film: Aakhri Khat-1966

Jatin Khanna, a Punjabi khatri, was born in Amritsar on 29 December 1942, and was adopted by parents who already had three daughters of their own.

a boy who was destined to make history before his prime and also become a part of history before his time-a strange story written by the invisible hand of destiny.

Jatin Khanna was born into a middle class family. He had no great ambitions. His only love was theatre and acting, specifically. He was among the most popular actors in inter-collegiate drama competition in Bombay (now Mumbai). After a stint in theatre, His love for acting made him join a talent contest organised by the United Producers Talent Contest, a contest planned by some of the leading filmmakers of the time through a nation wide selection procedure by panel of judges like Late Bimal Roy, Guru Dutt, Chetan Anand, G.P. Sippy, Sri Sakti Samanta, Sri B. R. Chopra, etc. He was the undisputed winner - making his film debut with chetan anand was in Aakhri Khat which went unnoticed..

Rajesh Khanna came from an affluent family. Khanna's father had misgivings about Rajesh's taking on a professional acting career. His initial foray into cinema with renowned film maker Chetan Anand was not a resounding success. Nonetheless, Rajesh persisted and exceeded all expectations. His previous theatrical background assisted him with the characterization of the personas of the cinema which he portrayed effortlessly and naturally.

He signed his first film, "Raaz' in 1967 and when on to sign fourteen films in a row, some of which were released, some not and all the films that were release were very big flops …

Released in November 1969, Aradhana made Rajesh Khanna a star. In the double role of a father and son, both air force pilots, Khanna cut a most dashing figure in uniform. His mannerisms - the crinkling of his eyes and shake of the head asking the heroine to come to him found instant favour with the audience and aided by such S.D. Burman ditties as Mere Sapnon ki Rani, Kora Kaagaz Tha Yeh Man Mera, Roop Tera Mastana, Gun Guna Rahe Hain Bhawarein and Baaghon Mein Bahar Hai, Aradhana was a golden jubilee hit.

He was declared the greatest superstar India had ever seen. He was more talk about then any other women being in India, treated almost like God and like God himself by many…

Success came to him like a season which seemed to have no end. Every film with him was a silver jubilee which was a very small success for him. It was only jubilees and more jubilees and success and more success for him, the kind of success no Dilip Kumar or Raj Kapoor or Dev Anand, the trio who ruled till he came and conquered had ever seen…

Rajesh Khanna was the dream man of every young woman, the dream son every father and mother and the dream brother of every sister.

Barely a short while later in December the same year, Raj Khosla's Do Raaste opened to full houses and also went on to be a golden jubilee hit. What's more in Bombay, the two films had their main theatres right across the road from one another, Aradhana at Opera House and Do Raaste at Roxy!

Thereafter till 1972, it looked like Rajesh Khanna could do no wrong. Film after film swept the box-office. But there was more to him than just his mannerisms as he built the image of a vulnerable, gentle romantic. In films like Khamoshi (1969), Safar (1970) and Anand (1970), he came up with sensitive performances straight from the heart.

He was the most wanted romantic actor. But he also proved to be a very sensitive actor with films like "Anand", "Safar", "Khamoshi", "Amar Prem", "Baawarchi" and "Namak Haram" which had a struggling actor called Amitabh Bachchan as his co-star who he considered a nobody and no competition for him and predicted a very bleak future for him. He openly told people that their was only one Rajesh Khanna and their would never be another.

Anand saw perhaps his greatest ever performance as a man stricken with cancer but wanting to live life to the fullest before he dies. In Anand, Rajesh Khanna more than justified Frank Capra's immortal observation, "Tragedy is not when actors cry. Tragedy is when audiences cry."

Indeed at the end of Anand as Amitabh sits by Khanna's dead body and as the tape recorder plays Khanna's voice, you cannot help but cry along with Amitabh. As Khanna went from strength to strength, even a guest appearance in Andaaz (1971) generated more hysteria than the hero of the film Shammi Kapoor. In fact symbolically this represented the end of the Shammi Kapoor era and the peak of the Rajesh Khanna era. Though Khanna worked with top heroines of the day like Waheeda Rehman, Nanda, Mala Sinha, Tanuja and Hema Malini, his most popular pairings were with Sharmila Tagore and Mumtaz. The BBC made a film on him, Bombay Superstar, and a textbook prescribed by the Bombay University contained an essay, 'The Charisma of Rajesh Khanna!' Rajesh Khanna formed a brilliant combination with director Shakti Samanta, Music Director R.D. Burman and 'his voice', singer Kishore Kumar resulting in such films like Kati Patang (1970) and Amar Prem (1971). With Hrishikesh Mukherjee, he gave fine performances in Bawarchi (1972) and Namak Haram (1973) ably carrying both films on his shoulders. The same year (1973) also saw him score with a strong performance in Aavishkaar, Basu Bhattacharya's realistic study of a marriage gone sour.

Than suddenly everything went through squally and smothering weather within just five years. The dream slowly showed signed of turning into a nightmare and finally turned out into one of the most stupefying and stunning nightmare of all time. The God fell from his pedestal. His magic failed and refused to come back. He had ten major flops in a row which marked the beginning of the end..

Rajesh Khanna By this time however, Rajesh Khanna's films had started flopping but he failed to see the writing on the wall as the success of films like Daag (1973), Namak Haram, Aap ki Kasam (1974), Prem Nagar (1974) and Roti (1974) still kept him afloat. Also Amitabh Bachchan had stormed the Industry with his intense 'angry young man' performance in Zanjeer (1973). With his tall and lean looks, Amitabh became emblematic of the new kind of action hero. Every hero fell to the Amitabh onslaught and Rajesh Khanna was no exception.

In the late 1960s, Khanna dated Anju Mahendru. The couple eventually drifted apart, and split in the early-1970s. He married Dimple Kapadia, a Gujarati, in 1973 In the late 1960s, Khanna dated Anju Mahendru. The couple eventually drifted apart, and split in the early-1970s. He married Dimple Kapadia, a Gujarati, in 1973 and has two daughters from the marriage. Soon the marriage led to a separation of ways.Khanna and Dimple Kapadia separated in 1984, as his schedule kept him away much of the time and she became interested in pursuing an acting career. After the separation, Tina Munim was romantically linked with Khanna, but the relationship was short-lived. Following a few years of separation, the relationship between Kapadia and Khanna blossomed once again, and remained that of close friends. Their elder daughter Twinkle , an interior decorator and also a former Hindi film actress, is married to actor Akshay Kumar and younger daughter Rinkie, also an Indian actress is married to an entrepreneur Sameer Saran. The actor in him showed signs of rising with films like "Thodisi Bewafaai", "Amardeep" and "Prem Nagar" but they were just sparks in the growing darkness that was surrounding him on all sight. He was loosing faith in himself, his God and the same people who worshipped him and were willing to live and die for him also lost faith in him. His misery reached its peak and a point of no returns when that nobody who was his co-star in "Anand' and "Namak Haram" , Amitabh Bachchan snatched his throne and everything that was his and left him staggering.

The actor in him tried to shine as an elderly character in films like "Avtaar" and "Amrit" but it was too late. His time had come to an and before its prime for reasons people are still trying to find out.

He tried to make it as a producer of film but failed miserably.

With Amitabh's success, different kind of movies began to be made with a stronger accent on action. Rajesh Khanna's romantic mannerisms now appeared jaded and out of synchronization with the times. Even films with old regulars Shakti Samanta (Ajnabi (1974), Mehbooba (1976), Anurodh (1977)) and Hrishida (Naukri (1978)) came unstuck at the box-office. What's more both Shakti Samanta and Hrishida went on do a series of films with the new superstar, Amitabh Bachchan! And to top it all, even his marriage to Dimple was on the rocks and subsequently she left him and resumed her acting career with much success.

Though Amardeep (1979) and Thodisi Bewafayi (1980) brought Rajesh Khanna some reprieve, it was the triple success of Agar Tum Na Hote (1983), Avtaar (1983) and Souten (1983) that proved to be the last strong flickers in a dying flame. Avtaar particularly saw a good performance from him in the role of a self-respecting garage mechanic. During that period he appeared in Khudai (1994) and won Best Actor Award at Ujvegistan at Russian Film Festival. He made his acting comeback with three to four years gaps in Aa Ab Laut Chalen (1999) and Kyaa Dil Ne Kahaa (2002) where he played elderly father roles. In 2006 he appeared in Jaana - Let's Fall in Love But in 2007 he has officially announced his second innings and has signed about ten new films simultaneously and some new TV serials. He is also going to participate as Celebrity Judge in a reality show at Sony Channel called K for Kishore, based on the legendary singer late Kishore Kumar Ganguly.

In the 1990s with his film career all but over, Rajesh Khanna entered politics and even served a stint as Member of Parliament with the Congress - I Party. He joined politics and met with his Waterloo because he never could get the hang of the real business of politics. Between 1991 and 1996, Rajesh Khanna was a member of Parliament for the Congress Party, from the New Delhi constituency. He has since been a political activist for the Congress Party.

In 2001-2002, Rajesh Khanna played major roles in two television serials: Aapne Parai (B4U & DD Metro) and Ittefaqu (Zee TV).He performed in a video album based on Tagore's immortal songs (Rabindra Sangeet) free of cost. Currently he is busy in processing his own music channel viz. R.K. Music Channel. He has recently endorsed a talent hunt programme namely "Star se Superstar tak" as the First Superstar of Indian Cinema, under the banner of Red Carpet Entertainment and donated a Gold Trophy of Rs.1 Crore with Ms. Priyanka Chopra.Recently he has signed a TV serial with Creative Eye Banner (Dhiraj Kumar). He is also participating as Celebrity Judge in a reality show at Sony Channel called K for Kishore, based on the legendary singer late Kishore Kumar Ganguly. He is also going to perform in a T.V. Serial Bhabhima with Leena Ganguly as Lead Pair of the serial.

He now lives with memories that haunt him. Rajesh Khanna will always live as a lesson for all the stars and super stars who are and who will be.

Super Star Rajesh Khanna irrevocably impacted Indian cinema and culture like no actor before him. His acting perfection and application of talent were drawn solely from his inward vision. Super Star Rajesh Khanna did not cultivate the phenomenal attributes that created his "superstardom" by reason or will, but through the connectedness to his own persona that the masses then idealized. For he is one who is impervious as to who is ahead and who is behind. Super Star Rajesh Khanna?s inward vision, a special gift from the divine leads him always. Today he is the indomitable and highly respected veteran of one hindred and fifty films. For me, he is like the Cary Grant of India. Both actors are Capricorns that have played the widest variety of roles without ever bankrupting the fascination of the audience. Super Star Rajesh Khanna is the platinum standard for landmark performances and sheer screen presence. Ever since the camera discovered his photogenia it has been having a love affair with it. His Byronic inspirations of romance as autographed elegantly on screen endure. Super Star Rajesh Khanna is a Greatest Legend because he kindles our affections at the highest denominators and that is a life nobly lived means.

Haathi Mere Saathi (1971)

Here is a movie that proved why Rajesh Khanna was a Super Star during his heydays. This movie, made by Devar from Chennai, like most of his movies, animals take the center stage. Actors are there only as "peripherals". This movie was not much of an exception. Yet, the pull of Rajesh during his success spree was so strong that anything he touched turned into gold.

This movie has some nice songs tuned by LP. There are six songs in this movie and most of them were popular. Especially, the solo by Kishore, "Chal Chal" was a chartbuster. Here is a description of the songs and the songs themselvs ...

About 3 from what I can remember -

1. Solo when he elephant-drags the broken down car.
2. Romantic duet
3. One more yes I remember where he earns money with the elephant - Odi odi uzhaikanum oorukkaga kodukkanum aadi paadi (by T.M.Soundarajan). This movie always confused me with Rajnikant's movie Annai Or Alayam (which was taken in Hindi too - featuring Dharam paaji - I think it was Maa)

ps: Sorry there is no song when the elephant dies.. sad.gif

Apna Desh (1972)

If nothing else, Rajesh Khanna will be remembered for many movies with some memorable songs. This album is a representative and fine example of this. RD seems to be at his best in providing great music especially for Rajesh's movies. Almost all songs from this album were popular. All three duets and Kishore's solo stand out.

advertisementThakur Vikram Singh, while driving home in his chauffeur-driven car, loses control, and crashes it in a building, instantly killing a woman. Vikram finds out that the woman had a young son, Raju, and decides to adopt him to atone for this crime. He takes him home with him, but Vikram's snobbish and arrogant son, Maan Singh, does not take kindly to this intrusion. Vikram decides to send him away to a hostel so that he can learn to get along with everyone. Shortly after that, Vikram passes away, his estate is taken over by his brother, Pratap, and Maan is allowed to return home. The first thing Maan does is to get Raju out of the house into their stables, and Pratap brands him with the letter "M" on his back. Years later, Raju is still working in the stables, is in love with Maan's sister, Poonam, and hopes for better times. When Maan finds out that Raju is in love with Poonam, he has him severely beaten, and left for dead, and arranges his sister's marriage with Yuvraj Singh. Years later, a man named Rai Bahadur Rajdev Singh enters the Singhs' lives. Maan suspects that it is none other than Raju, only to find out that he has no scar or any marking on his back. It is then that Maan finds out that his dad did not die but was killed. Maan swears to avenge his father's death, but does not realize that he may not even have a roof on his head as he has lost everything in a horse race to Rajdev. The questions remain, who killed Vikram; who exactly is Rajdev; and did Poonam marry Yuvraj Singh

Paap Ka Ant (1989) पाप का अंत
Paap Ka Ant released December 8th, 1989.

Starring Govinda, Madhuri Dixit, Rajesh Khanna, Hema Malini, Asrani, Birbal, Dinesh Hingoo, Anupam Kher, Guddi Maruti, Mac Mohan, Tej Sapru and Ranjeet.

Director: Vijay Reddy Producer: Gautam Bokadia

Police Commissioner Khanna (Rajesh Khanna) arrests a vicious criminal named Shankar (Birbal), but Shankar's political connections, via a friend, to Minister Prajapati (Anupam Kher) get him released. Prajapati holds the reigns of many fellow politicians and police officials which allows his son Vikram, with his friend Shankar and their gang, to commit several ruthless murders for which Khanna attempts to arrest Shankar again, this time with a 'non-bailable' warrant.

Awaiting trial, Khanna is murdered and his fiance Jyoti (Hema Malini), who is an advocate, has her testimony refuted in court as being partial to the victim. The only other witness must perjure himself as his family has been threatened. Jyoti is unable to withstand the travesty of justice and so defames Minister Prajapati during his public campaign. Embarrassed and now losing voters, Prajapati displays his power to Jyoti by having her witness the gang rape of her younger sister Nisha (Madhuri Dixit).

Nisha's life is seemingly over and she also has not heard from her own fiance Arjun (Govinda) in awhile. Nisha attempts to kill herself, but Jyoti rescues her and vows to avenge their losses. Jyoti goes so far as to disguise herself to gain close access to each of the gang members in order to bring about their downfall. Meanwhile, Arjun has been away on a police assignment, but has now returned. Jyoti tells Arjun of their tragedy, but not the whole truth as she fears Arjun will refuse to marry Nisha. Arjun goes after corrupt police Inspector Makkar, killing him and Arjun is arrested and tortured, but manages to escape. Arjun now learns about Nisha's rape and Jyoti and Arjun team up to go after Shankar.

Mere Jeevan Saathi (1972)

Rajesh teams up with Tanuja after the success of his other "Saathi" movie ("Haathi Mera Saathi"). This one is actually R.D. Burman and Kishore Kumar show. There are some beautiful numbers in this album. Beacause of their number, I am uploading them in three separate back-to-back posts.

First two posts are all songs from this album. In the second post, I am not certain about the singers names for the title song. The third post consists of several songs by Amit Kumar singing his Dad's hit songs from this movie. I am also including a song by Abhijit from his private album, that is from this movie. Also in this album, I am including a song from Lata's "Shraddhanjali" where she sings Kishore's song, again from this album.

Here is a description and the songs from this first posting ...

In this third and final posting I am including Amit's versions of Kishore's all solos from this movie. Abhijeet pays tribute to Kishioreda in his album "A Tribute To Kishore Kumar". "Diwane Leke Aaya" is one of the songs he sings from this movie that is in the album. Finally, Lataji came out with CDs paying tribute to some of her deceased colleagues. These were entitled "Shraddhanjali". I am including a song she sang from this movie, "O Mere Dil Ke Chain" that also includes her commentary paying a tribute to Kishore da.

Aavishkaar (1973)

Here is one of the fine movies where two principal actors give superb performances. There are only few songs in this movie but each one of them is a gem. The song "Naina Hain" by Asha, she sings with such deep passion, is a knockout. Except for the song "Mere Laal" all are from a CD. That song is from a tape.

Here are the songs ...

Daag (1973)

Here is anothr successful romantic drama Rajesh starred in. There are some nice songs in this album. One of my favorites is the solo by Kishore, "Mere Dil Mein Aaj Kya Hai". This song resonates in Kishoreda's beautiful voice with deep feelings of love.

Here are the songs ..

Namak Haraam (1973)

This one was by Hrishida. Even though story is credited to Gulzar, it was an adaptation of the famous English movie called "Becket" starring Richard Burton and Peter O'Toole. Rajesh plays the role of Burton and Amitabh plays the role of O'Toole. The English movie was based on a historical fact and was a period drama. The Hindi version was set in the modern times. But even before the Hindi version came, there was a movie made in Telugu in mid-60s called "Praana Snehitulu" with A. Nageshwara Rao and Jaggayya with almost the same backdrop as that of the Hindi version.

This was the second time Rajesh and Amitabh acted together for a Hrishida film. The other movie was "Anand". In that movie Amitabh was relatively new and eventhough gave a fine, restrained and understated performance, it was Rajesh Khanna's movie all the way. This time around many people were of the opinion that apparently the tables turned. Most of the critics throught that Amitabh's overpowering performance just outshone Rajesh's. After this Amitabh's fortunes started climbing up while Rajesh's started declining.

This one is a beauty as far as R.D. Burman's music is concerned. Kishoreda has four solos in it. Out of these three are just outstanding.

Here are the songs from this album ...

5 Rifles (1974)

This movie easily could have an alternative title as "Johar & Johar & Johar". Yes, I.S. Johar not only acted in it but introduced his daughter Ambika in the lead. He also introduced his son for one of the important roles. And of course, IS wrote the story, produce the movie, and directed it as well. It was out and out "I.S. Johar Show".

For most of the movies IS produced himself, Kalyanji & Anandji provided the music. This movie was no exception. There are some nice songs in it. For me the standout song is the mast number "Jhoom Baraabar Jhoom Sharaabi". With an offbeat voice of the singer it at once appeals.

Here are the songs ...

Jhoom Baraabar is an eternal favourite.. not only due to Aziz Nazan's singing but also the awesome lyrics

"iski beti ne utha rakhi hai sar pe yeh duniya
Yeh to acha hua angoor ko beta na hua"

Awesome smile1.gif

Here is another winner from the combination of Rajesh and RD. All of the songs are just a sheer delight to listen to. Especially duets. All of them. All duets were sung by Lata and Kishore.

I am also including a version of the song "Karvaten Badalte" sung by probably Anuradha Paudwal and Abhijeet. This information was provided by Ritesh (rdgadhvi), one of our members. Thank you Ritesh. This is 39 seconds longer than the original one that is on the CD. It is by the courtesy of the Forum members.

Roti (1974)

Here is a movie that came from Manmohan Desai film factory. He was on a roll during those years. He had 13 (?) jubilee hits in a row, a record still not broken. Many years back American television's "60 Minutes" program had an episode on Indian movies, in particular Hindi movies. In that broadcast they had an interview with Desai, Amitabh Bachchan, and others. The moderator complemented Desai on his unique achievement and told Desai that even Spielberg couldn't match such a record.

Desai's "Roti" is one of those jubilee hits. It had the hit pair Mumtaz & Rajesh Khanna and some fine music from ever so dependable Laxmikant & Pyarelal. I saw the movie and I didn't care much for it even though it had its moments.

Here are the songs ...

Aakraman (1975)

This movie has some great songs by Laxmikant & Pyarelal. Rajesh Khanna was a guest star. Interestingly, there was an English movie made in 1979, named "Hanover Street", that parallelled this movie which came four years earlier. The English movie starred Leslie Ann-Down, Harrison Ford, and Christopher Plummer. First half of both movies are just about the same but in the second half they drift apart. The English movie was written and directed by Peter Hyams; so it was not from any hitherto published novel.

LP exploits Kishore's singing strengths to full extent in this movie. Kishore has four beautiful solos and a duet, all just great. Anand Bakshi Saab also supplies some great lyrics.

Because of the number of songs in this movie, I am uploading them in back-to-back posts. Here is the first set of songs ...

Thanks for the comment. Asha and Mahendra had some great duets over the years, but this is certainly not one of them. This is out and out Kishoreda's album. And some great lyrics by Bakshi saab. Anurodh (1977)

Here is another beautiful album from LP. If not for histroinic skills, agreed he was good in some movies like "Anand", Rajesh will be definitely remembered for some of the great songs his movies gave us. This movie has four solos by Kishore and two by Manna. Almost all songs are very good, especially those by Kishore. One of my favorites from the movie is the title song "Aap Ke Anurodh Pe". Rajesh & Kishore combination always spelled hummable songs, I suppose. This movie is no exception.

By the way Rajesh was cast opposite his sister-in-law in this movie, Simple. She is the sister of Dimple who was married to Rajesh during this time.

I am uploading all the songs from the movie in the first post. In the second post I am including some version songs. Here are the songs from the first set ...

Chailla Babu (1977)

This movie was produced by Shomu Mukherjee whose wife is Tanuja and their daughter is the contemporary actress Kajol. Shomu is the son of famous Shashidhar Mukherjee who was a cofounder of Filmistan Studios. He presented this movie. Shomu also wrote the story. This movie was directed by Shomu's brother, Joy Mukherjee, who also was an actor.

The movie has some beautiful songs composed by the duo Laxmikant & Pyarelal. These were uploaded recently by the fellow Forum member Pagal Manva. These can be accessed at the following path ...

Karm (1977)

Here is a very unusual and atypical album from RD. Even lyricists here, Bharat Vyas and Raj Kavi Tulsi, are much different than anyone he worked with before. Because of this, album sounds so different than what one expects from RD. Still the music is beautiful, lyrics are rich, and songs are great.

Here they are ...

Amardeep (1979)

This movie was supposed to be a comeback vehicle for Rajesh. But it didn't do it. There were many attempts by Rajesh to capture some of his old magic. Unfortunately for him, the era of romance in the movies was over, and it was the time for angry young man with maar dhaad as an answer to many problems. The Hindi film industry has never recovered from this, at least not yet. Rajesh did have an occasional good movie even after he hit those lean years, but these were very few and far in between.

All these songs are by the courtesy of the Forum members. My many thanks to them. Now for the songs from this album ...

Thats a real pity, because all your effort is wasted coz here the attachments are deleted within a month, whereas on rapidshare, files remain active for 3 MONTHS AFTER LAST DOWNLOAD - which is a big advantage for someone going to all the trouble like you do. *Sigh* but its your choice and my bad luck.

Efforts going waste? Why? If someone wants songs that were uploaded earlier, they can just put in a request and the earlier downloaders (definitely one of us) will upload the files. SP's efforts are definitely not going waste just b'cos the files are deleted. The details and anecdotes that go with it carry more weightage than the song files. smile.gif

The disadvantage of rapidshare is anyone who is not even a member of this board can download and go. tongue1.gif

No place is permanent SS and some day soon rapidshare too will delete files after a month. mellow.gif

Dhanwan (1981)

Here is one fine album from Hridyanath Mangeshkar. His mainline cinema work is very limited, but whenever an opportunity came, he always proved he is every bit worth of it. The songs from this movie offer an excellent example of this.

There is an "R" phenomenon going on in this movie. First there is Rajesh. Then there is RR - Reena Roy. Next it is another RR - this time it is Rakesh Roshan. Of course Rakesh is famous for titling his own movies with the letter "K". But that is another story.

Now for the fine songs of this album ...
