Hello Friends,
A new forum dedicated to the legendary Shiv Dayal Batish is created here on HF at Ashwin Batish's request. Ashwin happens to be the son of Mr. Batish and is renowned and extraordinary sitarist and tabla player. We are fortunate to have him amidst us.

Dear Friends,
It is a great pleasure to see this level of discussion and participation on our rich musical heritage. I congratulate you all and give my special thanks to Pradeepji for setting this forum dedicated to my father Pt. Shiv Dayal Batish.
Our family is presently residing in Santa Cruz, California. My father has been hard at work writing and has just two more days left to complete of his latest book of Chalans and compositions on the Ragas of North India. I hope to release these in the near future. I will be happy to keep you posted on this.
In the film industry, he is well know as simply S.D. Batish but in his works his Pseudonym is "Rasik" which was conferred upon him by his Guruji Shri Chandan Ram Charan of Patiala.
My father is 90 years young with the spirit and mind of a 40 year old. He is always looking ahead to the next level of achievement and the next plateau to conquer. Under his guidance, we are planning on starting classes to teach his compositions and start a new subset of musicians that will hopefully teach these songs to future generations. The great part of all this is that is the last 25 years my father has been hard at work recording these compositions. It is my commitment to produce these and release them in the future.
I will try and have my father give his input on this forum. I will also try uploading some of his songs.
More than anything else, I am hoping that all of you can help complete our collection of his old songs. I know he will appreciate this the most. Here is a sher from one of his ghazals
QUOTE
Chaahe’ dil jaataa magar ho-taa na dilbar se’ judaa,
reh nahi`n sakti kabhi machhli samandar se’ judaa
S.D. Batish I present to you all this small "tofaa" of my fathers upcoming CD of Ghazals. It is a special gift to you all to listen and enjoy. The full CD is set to be released around December. I will be happy to let you all know of this.

All the best,
Ashwin Batish
PS. Please add any trivia and discuss things freely. I am just as much in need of information on my father's career. I feel that I really missed out on it all after moving to England in '64. I was only 12 year old. I wish I could have started learning and talking about all this then.

It is unbelievable, to have such great personality in front of us (it seems fortune star is smiling ).
As far as myself concerns, I came to know about Shri S.D.Batishji thru film sings only, specifically the Qwwaalii (only one of its own kind , unique)
'Na To Karwaan Ki Talash Hai, Na To Humsafar Ki Talash Hai'
Rafi Sahab, Mannada,Ashaji,Sudha Malhotra & S.D.Batish Sahab.
After hearing the qwwaalii, I wondered about Batish Sahab, tried to lsearch other songs but I was not fortunate enough. Now due to good luck of all HF Members, you are here.
Please convey my 'Charan Sparsh' to shri S.D.Batish Sahab.

There is one song of Shri S.D.Batish from old movie Toofan, Jala kar Aag Dil Mein Zindagi Barbad Karte Hain, Na Hanste Hain Na Rote Hain Na Kuchh Faryad Karte Hain.
I think last I heard this song, may be over 20 years back on Radio Ceylon and used to remember it by heart with all its three stanzas. Even today I can recall fully its first and third stanza "Ummeeden Hasrat - o -Arman Sab Dafna Liye Dil Mein; Dil - e - Barbad Mein Ab Ranj - o - Gham Aabad Karte hain" and "Nahi Apni Koi Manzil, Kahan Jaayen Kidhar Jaayen; Sahara Maut Ka Hai Maut Ko Ab Yaad Karte Hain".
I will be grateful if you could upload this song at your earliest convenience as I have been searching for it since I first heard it.
Thank You
Pradeep

USRAFIAN Saahab,
I appreciate your welcome and thank you for the kind words. I have forwarded your "Charan Sparsh" to my father and he sends you his blessings.
There are many stories my father has to tell about his time recording the "Naa To Kaaravaan Ki Talaash Hai Qawalli." I will try and get him to talk about this. I do remember that whereever he would go there was always a request from the audience for him to sing it. He tells me that he was in charge of rehearsing everyone and hence knew all the parts and would sing them all in the concert while calling out each singer's name
At my request, he has also written a short article about his old friend Mohd. Rafi. You can check it out at
http://www.raganet.com/RagaNet/Issues/4/rafi.html
RagaNet is our e-magazine.
I look forward to our Forum chats and hope to put up some more songs of my fathers for your listening pleasure. I hope you had a chance to listen to the song I uploaded earlier.
I like your little sher. Was that borrowed from Ghalib or Zauq? Slips my mind presently. But ... thank you!
Ashwin

One of my favorites too. Here's some information from a discussion on RMIM that I saved.

First of all, I want to give you and Dharamvirji my heartfelt thanks for this gift! My father and I have had a quest to try and find his old recordings. I was informed of this forum and we are very fortunate to have you all here. It is a fulfilling of my dream (personally) to hear these long forgotten and rare gems. After putting numerous posts on RMIM the result was luke warm although not completely fruitless. But still a large part of his songs from Lahore era are missing. If you have more of these please upload. I never heard the actual Gowandi songs although I have accompanied my father on tabla when he would sing them on video or in a concert.
It is my plan to have my father spend a few minutes everyday writing something special that I can post for you all. If you have anything is particular to ask him then let me know. I find that even though he likes to speak of his experiences of yesteryears it drains him if it goes on for too long
I am so excited about meeting you all here that I wish there was a way to get everyone together in one place sometime in the future to have you meet him personally. But, after seeing how far and wide the members are dispersed this can be a daunting task! But, then again, it could happen
I am also trying to get him to talk on video re. his life and times in the Indian music industry. It is so much fun to speak with him. Just a simple question can trigger some of the most interesting memories and invaribly the information is intriguing and filled with insight.
Kind regards,
Ashwin Batish

Ashwin:
Thanks for introducing your Dad to us. I was stuck up with so much of Mohammed Rafi, I did not even have the time to rediscover a hidden flower like your Dad. I must admit he had a great voice and style of singing including a good range. Although he sang such a long time ago, surprisingly both the type of voice he projected and his style of singing appear to be so much ahead of time and they sound very modern and contemporary.
I must congratulate you in having such a great Dad. May God grant him even more longevity so that we can forward to receiving his blessings and guidance for many more years to come.
Thanks again.
Binod.

I am very fond of your Sitar Power series albums. By combining sitar with the new age funky fusion, you have managed to create a new genre that I must have introduced to many of my friends.
This ghazal that you uploaded is sung very well and the sitar playing of your father (or, is it you?) was charming. Who sang it?
It is extremely heartening to see you here among us music lovers. Welcome!

Dear Dharmvirji
My greatest thanks to you and our forum members for helping preserve these songs. It is such selfless effort that puts an exclamation mark on our rich heritage. I hope we can together fill the void in my father's collection. I will try, in the next few weeks, to locate and upload some from my existing collection that was presented by some of the fans on RMIM.
I will be extremely greatful if you could help as best you can on any of my father's older panjabi songs (from 1936 - 1950). Especially the ones he recorded during his time in Lahore pre 1947. We literally have none of these. If you visit his web site at http://sdbatish.com/ go to filmography link and you'll see that I have started putting together a collection of his various movies. I also realise this will not happen in a few days or months. I will be patient and as we all bring forth this information to the forum I look forard to having this great ride
Being as you are in the heart of Panjab, India, how hard is it to get prints of old Indian movies? Is there a source one can rely on?
Also, my father mentions that he would personally give his copies of records to Radio Ceylon. Do you or anyone else reading this know what hapened to the station and specifically the large record and tape collection it housed? Can one still get copies out of this entity?
My best wishes,
Ashwin Batish

Anurag,
Thank you for your comments on my Sitar Power series albums. I have a thrid one in the works. My family humorously calls my releases the " Das Varshi Yojanaa" I get so busy doing other things that the past two releases were 10 years apart and the new one is similarly coming out after almost 10 years of the 2nd album. I am fusing Funk, jazz, calypso etc in this one and having a ball doing it.
On your question of my upload. ..... I am sorry i did not make this clear but here are the credits
Vocals by : S.D. Batish
Sitar, Tabla, sequencing, arrangement and mixdown - Ashwin Batish
Music composed by S.D Batish
Words by S.D. Batish
Based on a Carnatic Raga Paavankari of the Paavani Mela #41
I am working on releasing a new CD of Ghazals like the one above in December.
Glad you liked it
My father's new stuff really is awesome.

It is a privilege to have you on this forum. I am uploading a higher bitrate version of the Na To Karawan qawwali, though I am not sure how much better it is than the one u/led earlier. The length is 11:53, extracted file size about 11MB.
Incidentally, some of us are in fact close to your age bracket!

This song is remarkably similar in concept to the song sung by Kavi Pradeep (MD C. Ramchandra) in the film Nastik from around the same time (mid-1950's):
Dekh Tere Sansaar Ki Haalat Kya Ho Gai Bhagwan, Kitna Badal Gaya Insaan.
Interesting indeed!
Cheers.

Awesome quality usrafian sahab.
The copy I had was courtesy indianscreen.com. This one is so much better. Great sampling too. Seems as though it was taken from the movie clip? Very funny part by my father. His is the raspy voice singing "Sun Kar Iss Paapi ...". I never saw the movie. Do you know if it is available?
Best wishes,
Ashwin Batish

Dear 50some1ji,
My most sincere thanks for your upload. This was indeed a very well sampled version. The 128k mp3 format is almost necessay to keep decent quality. wmas I find do a better job at 128k.I did a test in my studio and the wma compression at 128k retained the higher end much better. mp3s have a bass enhance effect. They are great if you have a shrilly sounding piece the mp3 will make it sound warmer. Most of the pieces I've received in the past have been in much lower resolutions but it was still great to hear the pieces!
Anyway, thanks again for your contribution I look forward to many more such inputs.
Best wishes,
Ashwin Batish

Many thanks GKji,
This whole thing is such a rewarding and heartwarming experience! I am daily briefing my father and the rest of the family on the posts and the old songs that are being uploaded. I cannot describe the glow on everyone's faces here. They are simply exhilarated and we all feel so connected to a missing part of our lives. So thank you one and all
My father sends his blessings and has just finished hearing the Qawalli you uploaded. It sound amazingly vibrant for a low res bit rate. Please add any more if you have them. I would appreciate a higher bit rate copy for our archives so if anyone has that you can either post it here or email it directly to me at info@batish.com
Warm regards,
Ashwin Batish
Ashwin sahab,
It is a privilege to have you on this forum. I am uploading a higher bitrate version of the Na To Karawan qawwali, though I am not sure how much better it is than the one u/led earlier. The length is 11:53, extracted file size about 11MB.
Incidentally, some of us are in fact close to your age bracket!
Regards,

Ashwin,
Let me add on my "welcome to you" (onto HF). We are indeed very lucky to have you in our midst. Panditji's duets with Rafi from Railway Platform (Dekh Tere Bhagwaan Ki Haalat), Baalam (Duniya Waalon Mujhe Bataao), Humaari Manzil (Woh Aur Zamaana Tha...with Rafi and Geeta Dutt) and many many more really were the essence of the golden era of Hindi film music.
Personally, I think Panditji and Chitalkar Ramachandra were some of the pioneers of the form of singing that since became popular through the late 50s and early 60s.
Please convey my deepest regards to the great soul.
Thank you
Hithesh

BABUJI JALDI JAGIYE (3:08)
SHAMSHAD BEGUM,S. D. Batish
If any of you know the rest of the songs in this movie please list them here and I will add them to the site information. As always corrections are always welcome.
